“Moe’s” Casse-croûte du Coin

2214 Maisonneuve West, Montreal, QC, H3H

Rated this place:

A Montreal classic: Often referred to as “Moe’s”, this small 24-hour casse-croute/diner is located at the corner of Lambert Closse and de Maisonneuve, tucked away in the basement of an apartment building. One of Montreal’s most classic hidden gems, Moe’s has been running since the 1950’s – and not much has changed. I understand it was quite hopping during the long-forgotten glory days of the Old Montreal forum, however now Moe’s is home to seasoned regulars, students, and twentysomethings with wicked hangovers. The Grand-slam breakfast, with 3 eggs, 2 sausages plus bacon or ham, French toast or pancakes, homefries, toast and coffee is a tour de force, and I understand the Breakfast club with poutine is great for those with big appetites and low cholesterol. Pancakes are fluffy and generous, and the milkshakes (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana...) are a hit. Many selections run well under $10, and are served with the usual mild, delicious, cheap diner coffee. Each table is equipped with a mostly decorative jukebox and a giant tube of maple syrup, and if you look really hard, you can glimpse a hint of the light of day in between the overgrown plants that line the dusty windows above you. Moe’s retains a certain lived-in je ne sais quoi that only comes with restaurants that existed pre-smoking ban. A must see for anyone trying to get a true Montreal experience.

Burgundy Lion

2496 Notre Dame O., Montreal, QC, H3J1N5

Rated this place:

A taste of the UK in La Petite-Bourgogne: The recently established Burgundy Lion restaurant and bar is described as “…a modern English pub with traditional English cuisine mixed with a more laid back, quintessentially Montreal feel”. The Montreal influence can be seen with the Lion’s selection of draft beer, among other things, including popular locals Burgundy Lion Ale ($6), St-Henri’s microbrew Bierbrier ($7), Unibroue’s Blanche De Chambly ($7), and Cidre du Minot ($7). In addition, the bar features an impressive scotch and whisky list, premium gin, and moderately priced wine. Stop in to watch the game, or enjoy a plate of Fish & Chips de la Petite Bourgogne ($16) made with Cod which, although delicious, sat a little heavy. The Fish & Chips are served with the Lion’s famed homemade house chips (I opted for an over-dressed, soggy salad - *sigh*) and something I assumed was guacamole – not so. ‘Twas mushy peas. The staff seem to love their jobs – the bartender I spoke to was singing praises about her coworkers, her superiors, and the wonderful working atmosphere. I’m told the “Sticky Toffee Pudding” ($8) is not quite authentic, but that the outside terrace is wonderful in the summertime. Defiantly a place to try, at least for a pint, in the up-and-coming Little Burgundy neighbourhood.
