Paul Patates

760 Rue Charlevoix, Montreal, Quebec, H3K 2Y2

Rated this place:

a trip back in time: Stepping into Paul Patates is like stepping back into 1950, when popular buzz words like “trans-fat” didn’t exist, and neighbourhood mom-and-pop restaurants ruled. A vision in chrome and neon, Paul Patates is a small corner diner in Pointe St. Charles that is big on charm, complete with black vinyl diner stools, table-top jukeboxes, squeaky poutine, salty string fries, soft serve and ice cream floats, and a genuine feeling of nostalgia. Stop in for an all-dressed toasté or steamée – a grilled hot dog with “the works” - mustard, relish, homemade coleslaw and onions on a toasted or steamed bun. And the real speciality item, bubbly artisanal homemade spruce beer, a Quebecois soft drink, and the perfect aperitif. For a real treat, try a spruce beer float – the answer to the long, hot dog days of summer.

Reuben's Deli

1116 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montreal, Quebec, H3B1H4

Rated this place:

Check your diet at the door : Be sure to check your diet at the door when you head to Reuben’s, a good old-fashioned smoked-meat diner. A great choice for meat-eaters in a rush or on a budget, and a wonderful pre-game alternative to the usual busy spots. Try a hamburger piled with caramelized onions and paired with salty string fries, or splurge a week’s worth of calories on the restaurant’s namesake – the Reuben. For those with a big appetite, this delicious grilled sandwich on pumpernickel bread, piled high with ½ pound of smoked meat, cheese, sauerkraut and Reuben’s sauce is the piece de résistance. Any place that sells Root Beer Floats gets an A+ in my books, but don’t forget to try a succulent slice of their legendary Strawberry Cheesecake
