Sunday is Mother's Day, and what she really wants is your time. Take Mom out for a healthy brunch or lunch this weekend and she'll be ever so proud of your excellent judgement. (Flowers earn bonus points.)

Le Pain Quotidien

10 Yorkville Ave, Toronto, ON, M4W 1L4

Note: Casual but classy, this is the perfect place to take your mother for a simple meal.

Healthy meals and sweet treats: Le Pain Quotidien has become one of my favourite spots in the city, especially for breakfast (which is served all day), due to its focus on real, whole foods and healthy ingredients. The eggs and bread are organic - try a soft-boiled egg with bread for a simple breakfast - as are many of the other menu options, like the oatmeal, the granola, some of the salads and even the lemonade. On the sweeter side, the caffe mocha is divine - real chocolate, not syrup - as are the lemon tarts and other desserts, which you can pack to go as well as eating in. Check the website for a full menu.

Note: Love the Sunday brunch here, although I suspect they may be booked for Mother's Day. Maybe you can postpone?

Fressen Restaurant

478 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M5V2B2

Note: It's vegetarian only, so might not work for every mother, but it's perfect if your mom likes or prefers to eat veggie.

Czehoski

Note: And maybe you can go for a walk through Trinity-Bellwoods after brunch.

Senator Restaurant

249 Victoria St, Toronto, ON, M5B1T8

Real food, cosy locale: I was thrilled when I finally discovered the Senator, as the neighbourhood around Eaton Centre always seems devoid of good (non-touristy) places to eat. It's since become one of my favourite brunch spots, partly because of the food (which always seems to please everyone - my parents loved it here) and partly because of the classic diner decor (it's the real thing). I can't vouch for everything as I think I've ordered the huevos rancheros every time I've been - they're that good. They offer you three eggs, fried, but I get two poached - partly because it's healthier and partly because I prefer them. (And three eggs is too much.) They're served with fresh avocado, beans, salsa and a lovely little cornbread muffin.
