The Yonge and Bloor neighbourhood has an almost European quality in the sense that there are lots of hidden-away gems on side streets (and underground). I'm still discovering the area but these are some of my new favourite lunch spots.

Camros Organic Eatery

Amazing healthy lunch: I only recently discovered Camros and I can't believe I was missing out for so long. It's my new favourite lunch spot - the food is fresh and healthy but also quite filling. You can pick and choose from a variety of dishes (all are vegetarian) including stews, salads and rice balls, and they have tahini sauce and lemon juice to put on top. It's a great way to get a variety of vegetables - and nutrients - in one meal. Like SproutRight said, the kale is amazing - even if you don't usually like kale, make sure to try it (it's very good for you!). Next time you're in the Yonge and Bloor area, give Camros a try.

Shogun Japanese Restaurant

Healthy Japanese: The Japanese diet is often touted as among the world's healthiest, though you wouldn't always know it from some of the restaurants in Toronto, with their huge portions and tons of fried food. Shogun is a bit more restrained and offers a wide selection of dishes, all available with brown rice, which is not only higher in nutrients and fibre but has far more flavour, too - they use what seems to be a variety of red rice that is chewy and nutty. For a simple meal, I like the vegetarian donburi - a bowl of rice topped with veggies and egg and served with salad and miso soup. They also have a big selection of combos and individual dishes, and I've been told their fish selection is very good, although I don't eat fish myself.

Le Pain Quotidien

10 Yorkville Ave, Toronto, ON, M4W 1L4

Healthy meals and sweet treats: Le Pain Quotidien has become one of my favourite spots in the city, especially for breakfast (which is served all day), due to its focus on real, whole foods and healthy ingredients. The eggs and bread are organic - try a soft-boiled egg with bread for a simple breakfast - as are many of the other menu options, like the oatmeal, the granola, some of the salads and even the lemonade. On the sweeter side, the caffe mocha is divine - real chocolate, not syrup - as are the lemon tarts and other desserts, which you can pack to go as well as eating in. Check the website for a full menu.

Le Gourmand

20 Bloor St. East, Toronto, ON, M4W 3G7

A bright spot in the food court: This isn't the nicest location of Le Gourmand - it's surrounded by food court, after all - but it's a great spot for a takeout lunch (eat it in the park) or to grab something for dinner on your way home. And if you must eat in, there's a newly decorated seating area across the hall. Their lattes are among the best in town (and are priced well too - under $3 for a small soy latte) and they have a large selection of real food that varies daily. Several of my coworkers are hooked on the poached salmon sandwich, while I like the grilled vegetable panini (a well-dressed grilled cheese, really). They also have lots of salads to choose from and if you're in the mood for something sweet, lots of tempting desserts and pastries, including Portuguese custard tarts and what some call the best cookies in the city.

Mela

7 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto, ON, M4W1L1

Italian vegetarian: I'd been meaning to try Mela for a while - I'm always on the hunt for good vegetarian restaurants - and finally made it for lunch this week. My friend and I both ordered the lasagna (about $8), and it was brought to our table quickly. The ingredients were fresh, not heavy, and the ricotta they used in the filling was so good I could have eaten it on its own. It unfortunately wasn't as hot as it could have been (looks like everything is premade and reheated) but for a quick lunch on a workday, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make in exchange for something quick and healthy in a vegetarian locale.
