My boyfriend and I have watched way too much Kitchen Nightmares. We often wonder what Gordon Ramsey would think of some of our favourite places. Unlike the disasters you'd find in the kitchen of Massimo's and Sushi on Bloor, this list is the places that I think are doing things right - using quality ingredients and focusing on just doing a few things and making sure they're done right.

Tati Bistro

124 Harbord St, Toronto, ON, M5S 1G8

Mussels: The restaurant is adorably decorated and the mussels were perfectly cooked.

Pizzeria Libretto

221 Ossington Ave., Toronto, ON, M6J 2Z8

Pizza: It's definitely the best Pizza Place in Toronto, with casual Italian ambiance (I'm a huge fan of communal tables), fantastic service, and the best pizza I've ordered in the city. In addition, they have a strong commitment to authenticity and quality, which they detail on their website. They also have strong green commitments - for one, if you order take-out, you bring your own tupperware.

Banjara Indian Cuisine

796 Bloor St. West, Toronto, ON, M6G 1L7

Indian food: I grew up in the suburbs - and until now I was yet to find a Toronto indian restaurant that could compete with Mississauga/Brampton. Banjara is '905' good. The service is great and they participate in the bring your own wine program. My favorite is the baingan bharta.

Gandhi Roti

554 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M5V2B5

Totally Addicted: They have perfected the Roti. Every variety I've tried is amazing. When I go away on vacation, I get more antsy to return to Gandhi Roti than to my own apartment

Trust them, they mean it when they say hot. The owner has lots of funny stories of people trying to be macho and ignore his warnings when they order 'extra-hot'.

The portions are huge and usually last into lunch the next day.

Best filling: Matter Paneer

Grace Restaurant

503 College Street, Toronto, Ontario, M6G1A5

Romantic Date Spot: Everything about the meal was perfect. Perfectly dressed, fresh salad. Perfectly cooked Halibut. Perfectly chic decor.

The lemon tart, though, transcended perfect. Grace's lemon tart is the platonic ideal of a lemon tart. The crust is so thin and delicate. The filling is fresh and lemony without being overpowered by sweetness.

Hank’s Café

9-1/2 Church Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5E1M2

I want to go to there: As a devotee of Manic Coffee, I was disappointed to hear that Jamie Kennedy had scooped up their award winning barista, Sam. That was before I got a new job steps away from his new cafe, Hank's.

Hank's is a fantastic little cafe dedicated to serving simple - but delicious - breakfast and lunch items. Nothing on the menu is over $7.50, but still manages to follow Kennedy's principles of using locally sourced, fresh, quality ingredients.

There isn't a wide variety of meals, but every item is perfected. And, of course, they have amazing intelligentsia coffee.

The Black Hoof

928 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON, M6J 1W3

Surprisingly, even good for vegetarians.: It's known for it's meat - but also has fantastic bread and cheese plates, beatiful decor, and to-die-for cocktails.

They're participating in the bring-your-own-bottle program (though, I don't know why you would when their wine list is this good) and they serve food well into the night! The kitchen is open past midnight on weekends.

Rodney's Oyster House

469 King St. W, Toronto, ON, M5A1M8

My Fave T.O. Resto: I wouldn't change a thing about Rodney's. They've found the perfect balance between casual and fancy. It's high end without being too pretentious.Their waiters are always so cool - but manage to be even friendlier than they are hip. And, most importantly, they serve the best seafood in the city.Definitely pricier, but worth splurging on special occasions with a lobster and oysters.
