OurFaves Deal Seekers from Scarborough

Created on Mar 13 2009

Let's make a great escape somewhere -- anywhere -- for March Break with the family. Here are some standout spots to try whether you're planning to stay in town or go beyond! (Special note: some of them are weather-permitting)

Woodbine Beach

10 Ashbridges Bay Pk Rd, Toronto, ON, M4L 1A1

Walking, rollerblading: The boardwalk is great for strolls and rollerblading. I had a bday party there and the picnic areas are wonderful (lots of green grass and tall trees). Definitely a place for everybody.

Harbourfront Centre

235 Queens Quay W, Toronto, ON, M5J 2G8

Summer walking spot: My bf and I love taking strolls along the docks and watching the ferries.

Don Valley Brick Works

550 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON, M4W1X8

Place for photography: Inside the dimly-lit abandoned brick warehouse there are stray wiring and pipes, dusty heaps of crumbling brick, faded graffiti tags, ominous tunnels, and glimpses of sunlight that pierce through cracks in the ceiling and walls. A place like this deserves an SLR and nothing less.

Milliken Park

Steeles Ave., between McCowan and Middlefield Rds., Toronto, ON

Note: Did you know they have Kite-flying Sundays?

Markham/gta park for walks: It's got a beautiful pond and a winding pathway. Kids have a playground and a waterpark, as well as kite-flying Sundays. There's a romantic wooden bridge surrounded by blossoms, where I imagine many wedding photos have taken place. My bf and I had a picturesque picnic with some geese to keep us company.

Ontario Place

955 Lake Shore Blvd W, Toronto, ON, M6K3B9

2 events-for-1 price date idea: The only entrance ticket you should buy is for the Chinese Lantern Festival, which not only allows you to see amazing displays and cool cultural performances (like a girl juggling chairs and a huge urn with her feet), but also includes entrance to the CNE. Buy the festival tickets in the day to get into the CNE and end the date with an evening at Ontario Place, where they also have food kiosks (ha! Mandarin!) if you crave Asian cuisine. ETA: I just found out it's free AFTER 6pm! Be forewarned!

Putting Edge

60 Interchange Way, Thornhill, ON

Mini golf course: This place is a glow-in-the-dark mini-golf course. Very fun to take anyone at any age, but my little cousins LOVED it. Tip: Wear lots of white, and bring someone who bleached their teeth to see if it glows (let me know if it works).

Scarborough Family Golf Centre

1395 Tapscott Road, Scarborough, ON, M1X0A1

Driving range: This place is pretty convenient for me at Markham and Steeles, and it's also really great for stress relief. I gotta work on my form though ;) The prices for buckets are on average around $10. Swing away!

Alexander Muir Park

Yonge and Lawrence, Toronto, ON

Discovery walk, Place for wedding photos: It's expansive and romantic for scenic walks during the spring and fall. We walked for hours here, following trails and at one point, there were uneven stone steps up a hill and wooden planks to cross. There's an area for dog walkers and a ravine for avid photographers.

The stone terrace is gorgeous, and is known to attract plenty of couples for their wedding photo shoots. You'll find yourself struck by how beautiful it is here, surrounded by towering trees and a lush rose garden.

Woodbine Centre and Fantasy Fair

500 Rexdale Blvd, Etobicoke, ON, M9W6K5

Fantasy fair: This indoor attraction is the perfect place to take the kids on a rainy or snowy day. Remember to wear socks, no shoes are allowed if the kiddies want to explore the Play Village, a winding maze of slides and rope climbs. There's also a giant carousel, a ferris wheel, bumper boats, and more. My personal favourite that is no longer there -- the parachute drop. You will be missed.

Toronto International Pearson Airport

3111 Convair Drive, Mississauga, Ontario, L5P 1B2

Ri-co-lah!: This sexy, Gehry-esque curved structure gets bolder when you step into its hollow center. Tiny whispers get amplified and reverberate around you -- it's pretty hard to resist shouting out "Ri-co-lah!" or other nonsense. A fun distraction while you wait to board your plane, but unfortunately, it's only available at the end of Terminal 1's Pier F (past security).
