French bakery: After a delicious lunch of Germany and Austria's finest at nearby Boucherie Atlantique, transport yourself to France as you waddle 1/2 block over to the Duc for dessert - homemade ice cream (decadent! the boozy ones are particularily punchy), pain au chocolate (the best), homemade chocolates, cakes, cookies, éclairs, plus a lovely selection of cheese, quiche, freshly baked baguette, pastries, croissants, etc. Cappucino's in the sunny Earl Grey tea room are a lazy afternoon treat.

Calories

4114 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montreal, Quebec, H3Z1P2

Chocolate/Cheesecake/Custard?Pick your poison: Steps from the boutiques on Greene Avenue and Place Alexis Nihon, the newly renovated Calories is a great place for lunch, or a gelatin covered, custard filled, sugar coated afternoon snack worthy of diabetic shock. Sandwiches and salads are simple, satisfying, and moderately priced. The half-and-half lemonade/ice tea slushy is a perfect warm weather treat, but for many the real lure of Calories is the selection of cakes, pies, cheesecakes and tarts, and the boozy dessert drinks. Popular dessert selections include Reese’s Pieces cake, Oreo Cheesecake, a variety of chocolate and white chocolate selections, Fruit tart and Key Lime Pie.

Tiny treats, big on taste: Charming specialty cupcake shop in Little Burgundy, Itsi Bitsi won first prize in Créativité Montréal Business (less that 1,500 sq. ft.) category. With a different delicious cupcake featured everyday (from Tuesday-Sunday), Itsi Bitsi is a perfect afternoon snack, after dinner treat, or party favor. With prices that begin at $2.85 per cupcake and flavours like “Caramel Curry Icing” and “Choco-Cardamom”, these are not the cupcakes of your childhood. A sampling of mini-cupcakes (from $1.00 each) is sure to tickle the most adventurous of palates. Itsi Bitsi also offers homemade gelato, and assorted teas, bath products, books, and gifts.

Les Chocolats de Chloe

546 Duluth St. Est, Montreal, QC, H2L1A9

Haute Chocolate: Charming, quaint, artisanal chocolatier in Montreal’s foodie Plateau neighbourhood. Chloé Germain-Fredette mixes up interesting creations using Valrhona chocolate alongside cardamom, saffron, assorted spices, fig and balsamic vinegar, pastis, Szechuan pepper, Earl Grey tea, and basil, to name a few. Or, stick to bestseller Fleur de Sel – my personal favourite. Salted butter caramel squares are to die for, as are solid chocolate bars ($6) which come in a variety of flavours such as dark chocolate, milk chocolate, hazelnut and more. Watch employees wield their chocolate magic behind a glass window, turning regular chocoholics into voyeurs, or during frosty months enjoy a delicious hot chocolate made with cinnamon and cayenne or vanilla served with a homemade chocolate-covered marshmallow. Visiting the website is almost as fun as visiting the store itself. It is interactive, cute, fun, and visually stimulating. Chocolates are $1.50 each or available in packages of 4 ($4.50), 6 ($11), 9 ($15.50), 18 ($29), or 27 ($43). Individual truffles must be kept a room temperature and consumed within two weeks. Chocolats de Chloé products are also sold at Olive and Gourmando and Camellia Sinensis tea house.

tea time: Au Festin de Babette is a cozy St-Denis gourmet shop and vintage-inspired tea room. Described as a “Marchande de Petits Bonheurs” Chocolaterie/Salon de The/Epicerie fine, Au Festin sells a variety of goodies such as chocolates, retro and vintage items, imported salts and oils (including an interesting looking salt from Cyprus), gourmet jams, cookies, over 60 varieties of tea, and homemade ice cream or gelato to be enjoyed on the terrace during the warm weather months. In addition, Au Festin offers a 10% discount for Member of Slow Food Quebec. A great place to warm up on a cold day, with a foamy cappuccino and one of the many homemade goodies.

Ponki Paradise: If the smell of the ponki’s (aka Paczki) doesn’t draw you in, Wawel’s impressive assortment of cakes, pastries, fresh bread and Polish baba’s, teas, coffees, spreads and a small selection of quality meats and cheese behind the deli counter is sure to keep you loyal. With seven locations in Montreal, Patisserie Wawel is a boulangerie, café and épicerie. Ponki’s (sometimes called Berliners) are Poland’s answer to the donut, only better. Since 1984, owner Peter Sowa has been supplying is plum, apricot, and cream-filled creations to countless cafés across town. In addition Wawel offers succulent strudels, brioche, and Polish delicacies like piaskowa and favorki, assorted breads, and homemade pierogi varieties. Oh, and if you ever run out of herring, Wawel has your back.

Suite 88

chocolate alchemy: Called a “Chocolate lounge and boutique”, Suite 88 is for serious chocoholics only. Efforts may be lost on those who aren’t harbouring a physical dependency on the sweet stuff. Suite 88’s offerings include gelato, waffles, cakes, and over 40 different kinds of chocolate bars, chock (choc?) full off combinations such as litchi and ginger, green tea, the ever popular Caramel and Sea Salt, and a chocolate shooter collection which mixes chocolate with sake (of all things!), amongst absolute mandarin, raspberry daquri, and champagne - imagine the possibilities! Suite 88 also does classic creations such as chocolate-covered Oreo’s and my personal favourite –chocolate covered pretzels. The perfect marriage of sweet and salty. Suite 88 is an afternoon stopover not to be missed.
