Toronto is a burger-eating city and everyone has a personal favourite and sworn-allegiance to one or the other. Here's a working list of Toronto's top picks (in no particular order!)

Burger Hut Foods Ltd

804 Sheppard Ave E, North York, ON, M2K1C3

Burger goodness at a great price, North York: In a plaza where the shops have changed hands, brands and specialities so many times in the past 10 years, the one thing that remains the same is Burger Hut. A busy spot both day and night, if you've got a burger craving, this is the place to go - for a quick sit down or take-out.

For almost 40 years, Burger Hut has proven to be one of Toronto's top burger joints, time and time again. In fact, when you walk into Burger Hut and you'll see one newspaper clipping after the next framed on the wall, dating back to 1997 timetabling its recognition on Toronto's food scene. Even Chef Mark McEwan (Bymark, North 44, One), maker of the $40 "Gucci" burger at Bymark, is known to love Burger Hut's burgers.

Burger Hut offers a variety of burgers: 1/4lb or 6oz burgers, double burgers, fish and chips, gyros on a pita, steak on a kaiser, salads, breaded veal/chicken on a bun/burger and a speciality: boerewors sausages, a traditional South African sausage. Get a deliciously juicy and tasty 1/4 lb burger with fries for $5.85 or the 6 oz steakhouse burger with fries for $$6.95. Great selection of toppings accompany a great burger.

Johnny's Hamburgers

2595 Victoria Park, Scarborough, ON, M1T1A4

A sworn favourite old-school burger joint: It's simple and old-fashioned at Johnny's Hamburgers. Drive-up to pick up your order to eat in the car, standing outside or at the picnic tables - but no matter what time of day, Johnny's Hamburgers is never be found empty.

Get a hamburger for $2.95, a cheeseburger for $3.35 and other burger joint specialties like hot dogs, steak/veal/fish on a kaiser, fish and chips, fries and classically-made onion rings. Dressings are moderate and the burgers themselves are standard - but no matter how few or how many stars it may get, it still is and will always be a sworn favourite to those in the neighbourhood.

The first time I went to Johnny's in high school, I thought I had stepped into a bizzaro-world likened to Seinfeld's soup-nazi episode - except this was my burger-nazi episode. The older man behind the counter gruffly asked me what I wanted, no free smile attached, quickly passing me on to an equally grouchy fellow to dress my burger. But man oh man was that burger delicious. So, what can I say, it's still a sworn favourite.

Craft Burger

573 King St. West, Toronto, ON, M5V1M1

Killer burgers, milkshakes, onion rings: Best chocolate milkshakes in town. Onion rings, too. And burgers. Some even coin the joint as "Crack Burger" and have become Friday afternoon rituals for some offices.

From classic burgers at $5.65, cheeseburgers at $6.85 and fancy'd up gourmet-type "Signature" burgers (although they'd probably deny the "gourmet" status), Craft Burger offers a great selection for carnivores, chicken-only eaters and herbivores alike. Try the Craft Burger (with mushrooms, rosemary garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato), the Craft Spicy (with caramelized onions, spicy chipotle mayo, lettuce and tomato), the Lamb Burger (Fresh Ontario Lamb with a cilnatro-feta spread, lettuce and tomato) or the Craft Blue (with gorgonzola, avocado, lettuce, tomato and rosemary garlic mayo).

Great lunch combos including fries and a drink pack this place daily at lunch time with die-hard Craft Burger fans looking for their fix. Make sure you try the old-fashioned milkshakes made with ice cream and the onion rings, beautifully battered and fried masterpieces, worthy of being called onion rings.

Sadly, the only thing really hurting Craft Burger is that it doesn't offer any bacon, but we'll let them get away with it as long as those chocolate milkshakes keep coming creamy and delicious.
