Italian: A perfect example of one of those hard to find gems that commands regulars. Lovely, cozy back patio. Wait staff are quiet and serious - if Tony Soprano ever ventured to MTL, he would eat here. Owner Rocco mixes and mingles with the regulars. Avocado and grapefruit appetizer was refreshing and crisp, and Osso Bucco was melt-in-your mouth succulent. Meal is followed by a basket of walnuts in the shell to help you finish off your wine. Loved it.

Not your average North American-style ‘za: Bottega is not for Domino’s or Pizza Hut lovers, but more those who enjoy true Italian pizza. Many of the pizza selections are without tomato sauce, such as the Nolana ($15) with house sausage and mozzarella backed with a bitter kick of Rapini, or the Ortolana ($14) topped with mozzarella and grilled vegetables only. If you are looking for something a little more familiar, make sure you chose a pizza with pomodoro in the title or description. The Polpetta con Pomodoro makes an indulgent appetizer, a single, solitary, stately meatball in tomato sauce ($4), which cut like butter, was outstanding. Calamari fritti is lovely at $10, and for those looking for a healthy choice, the Peperoni Grigliati (grilled peppers ) at $7 are a delectable option. The Caprese pizza ($16), simple and delicious, is an excellent choice for a first time visit, with tomato sauce, strategically placed buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, oregano and olive oli. Wait staff was pleasant and conversational, though the restaurant itself was startlingly over-lit and excruciatingly loud which didn’t make much for an intimate atmosphere. After a few bites of the homemade strawberry gelato or luscious, ricotta-filled cannoli, all was forgiven. However, few items rivalled the homemade chocolate and hazelnut ice cream, with ribbons nutella-esque chocolate swirl throughout. Good for pairs, as the resto was too loud to communicate amongst four people.

back in old Napoli...that's amore: Well-priced BYOB at the corner of Dante and de Gaspé in the heart of Montreal’s Little Italy. Just a few blocks from Marche Jean Talon, Pizzeria Napoletana is a popular neighbourhood corner pizzeria featuring 34 varieties of pizza, 31 choices of pasta, and some much harried waiters. Bedside manner is not the specialty here, but it is packed with young families, couples, and parties on weekends. Insalata paesana, with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, artichokes and olives was a nice starter, if not a little heavy on the oil and vinegar dressing. Campagnola pizza ($13.25) was a big hit, with mushrooms, sausage-style pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato sauce, onions, and green olives, as was the Bufla pizza ($17.50) with delicately seasoned tomato sauce, roasted garlic, fresh basil and mozzarella di Bufala imported from Southern Italy. Both pizzas were presented on satisfying crispy thin crusts that gave way to softer but strong pizza-pie dough and cooked to perfection, with cheese lightly browned. The Gnocci Fiorentina, with creamy tomato sauce and parmesan had a pleasing, melt-in-your-mouth texture and was served in a generous portion. To top it off, taxes are included, which means no funny surprises at the end of the meal.

pizza pie for those on a budget: Small, laid-back pizzeria on St. Laurent with a great view of “The Main” and a simple menu. The Margherita pizza, a mixture of mozzarella and bocconcini, mild tomato sauce and fresh basil atop a thin crust, and served on a warm baking sheet (strange, I know) is tasty choice. The calzone was equally yummy, stuffed with goat cheese, peppers, mushrooms, and sausage. Pizza was served steaming hot, and wine was moderately priced (between $23-38). Most dishes fall under $15, and portions are generous. The service was quick, and our waiter was relaxed, attentive and very funny. Dinner for two with wine worked out to around $55 with tax. A great place for a casual budget-friendly meal
