Expert Eco-Friendly

Created on Apr 12 2009

To make this list, each restaurant had to please my entire family. Keep in mind that my kids have never ordered off of a kids menu and are adventurous eaters. The restaurants and their staff have been friendly, and the menus at each support local, organic and sustainable foods. More to come!

Pizzeria Libretto

221 Ossington Ave., Toronto, ON, M6J 2Z8

Now this is real pizza!: Favourite ECO-ASPECTS 1. supporting local and sustainable food - try the margherita pizza to understand what using the best ingredients does for a simple dish! 2. They filter our Toronto water on site and fill simple glass bottles and serve...happily…without charge. Make sure you get to their door early (read as: right when they open, check website for times) because it’s the only way to get a table without waiting, no reservations are taken. Libretto deserves the success…delicious and unpretentious real food at real prices. They claim to be “Simple, Natural, and Honest.”, I couldn’t agree more.

True Restaurant

69 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5R 1B8

Being True to True for Lunch: It's really exciting to find a restaurant that calls itself organic, and actually seems to be organic right down to their condiments and their drinks. The space is clean and absolutely beautiful. We frequent True on weekends with the family (ranging from 6 to 20 people) and although the service is not the most attentive (especially with kids), the food is consistently good. The arugula salad and the pizzas are delicious, especially on thin organic spelt crusts. It's convenient, healthy and simple...now if they can get more people into their large space, they will do better...i just hope i'll still be able to get my reservation...try it!

Magic Oven

788 Broadview Ave, Toronto, ON, M4K2P7

ORDER-IN PIZZA REDEFINED: Where to even start with this restaurant with multiple locations in Toronto! Local, organic and delicious - pizzas, pastas, salads and more. Be sure you try the Phytonutrient Magic on Spelt Crust. Packaging is recycled and biodegradable. Magic Oven locations even boast reclaimed sites featuring recycled furniture and fixtures, and it’s family owned (my nice people). Visit their website for online ordering (very easy!).

Gilead Cafe

4 Gilead Place, Toronto, ON, M5A 3C9

Now THIS is fast food!: JK Wine Bar is fabulous, but Jamie Kennedy has really done a great job redefining fast food at Gilead Cafe. Local, artisinal and fresh ingredients only have one outcome - delicious and healthy. Well, almost...if you want to indulge, there are the JK Frites, which are by far the best french fries in the city. It's worth the trip just to share an order. It's a great place for a quick business lunch (although it's very kid-friendly because it's so casual and quick), keep in mind it's counter service...if only they were open for dinner (nudge, nudge).

The Drake Hotel

1150 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario, M6J 1J3

great menu, great spaces: We consistently enjoy delicious brunches and dinners at the Drake. Friendly, aware and attentive service is the norm. If you enjoy burgers, this is the best one in town. If you want a comfortable spot for a romantic date, a large table for a family gathering or a private space for a private party, this is the spot in Toronto. They have it all, including a rooftop patio for all seasons. ECO-ASPECT - The menus are built from organic, "local and seasonal ingredients and inspired by Anthony Rose." Now only if they would serve organic beer!

Buddha Dog

163 Roncesvalles Ave, Toronto, ON

Rated this place:

delicious + fun: Considering I don't really eat meat, and I don't eat white bread (or let my family eat), Buddha Dog has become the exception. The team at Buddha Dog is great...you can really tell that they are proud of what they are doing. "The idea was to bring together the best local suppliers - Farmers, Dairies, Bakers, Butchers, Chefs, etc - to make an exceptional hotdog and let it represent the best of their region and culinary tradition." And guess what? They succeeded. Games on the tables, stickers and crayons to keep the kids busy and a simple menu with so many toppings, you'll be happy an adult meal is actually 4 or 5 dogs so you can try many. Pretty eco-friendly for a hot dog!

Gladstone Hotel

1214 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M6J1J6

A Hotel? It's so much more.: The Gladstone Hotel is a great place in Toronto for so many reasons, aside from being a hotel. They have created unique spaces for musicians, artists, foodies and families...to showcase, perform and indulge. They support and promote local and organic eating ( by the way they have a FRY BAR...sweet potato, potato and taro too with tons of toppings). Harvest Wednesdays supporting field to table eating (yum) are not to be missed...you can check their website at www.gladstonehotel.com for their complete calendar of events...and while you are there, you'll know why you need to try the Gladstone.
