Family Favorites: Things to do in the Spring These faves range in price from free to, well, not free... Let me know if I've missed anything good - we're always looking for stuff to do, particularly stuff that gets us outdoors to celebrate a pause in the rain!

Oppenheimer Park

400 Powell Street, Vancouver, BC, V6A1G6

Note: This is a review of the Powell Street Festival which was on March 28th this year and occurred at locations all over Japantown (including Oppenheimer park).

Cultural festival: There's nothing more surreal than seeing sumo wrestling in a park in the downtown eastside! This area of town gets a lot of attention for it's drug use, homelessness, prostitution, etc. Yet it's a part of Vancouver with a lot of history and actually a pretty interesting place to wander around! According to their website, the Powell Street Festival is 'an annual celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and heritage'.

Gardening Workshops for Kids: This is one of my favorite garden centres- I enjoy just walking around it and smelling the plants and rich earth, they also have really cool gift items inside so I never go home empty handed, even if I don't actually need anything... It also looks like you can start developing those little green thumbs early at these fun workshops offered at GardenWorks at prices ranging from $3 to $12 and the kids get to go home with something they planted or crafted! Parent participation and pre-registration required - check out the Children's Workshop tap under the Customer Clinics tab on their homepage...

Bike the Blossoms: One of my favorite things about Vancouver is the Cherry Blossoms that flower every year. They make Spring even more beautiful and leave a pink and white carpet of petals along the sidewalks of my neighborhood. Starting at Van Dusen Gardens you and your family can follow a self-guided tour of all of beautiful flowering trees as part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Includes stops at various farmer's markets along the way and slow food samples... yum! Takes place April 18th this year (2009). Pre-registration required: click on the event link at www.slowfoodvancouver.com. $10 per person/kids 12 and under free. You can also start the tour in Kitsilano or East Van - check the site for more info...

Kitsilano Beach

Best Playground for Your Little Monkey: If your kid loves to climb, the playground at Kits Beach is the perfect place. Hope your little monkey isn't afraid of heights! This park has the tallest slide I've seen in Vancouver so far. Lots of wooden fort style play apparatus - maybe not always appropriate for the toddler set. The playground is in some fun surroundings, too - beach volleyball, street style basketball, lots of cute dogs, and people watching opportunities everywhere you look!

BC Place Stadium

777 Pacific Blvd., Vancouver, BC, V6B 4Y8

Mini Sun Run: This is where the Mini Sun Run starts - 8:00 a.m. on Pacific Blvd., at the Sun Run 10K finish line (between BC Place and the Plaza of Nations). A fun family event, it's a 2.5 km 'race' that takes place every year (April 20 this year) and participants even get their names printed in the newspaper! Fee includes a tshirt and paints. Fun times and for a good cause too!

Stanley Park Children's Zoo

Note: PS Celebrate Spring by getting all mushy about the cute little baby lambs and goats!

Darn those mini goats are cute!: Thanks to recent bylaw changes we Vancouverites can now keep chickens in our backyards but if you want to pet a goat or smooch a lama you gotta go here. They also have the biggest pig I've ever seen and lizards and snakes (your not allowed to touch the reptiles unfortunately).

Bellies to Babies Celebration: Formerly known as Vancouver's biggest baby shower - this is an annual Vancouver event. This year it's at the Croatian Cultural Centre on May 3 2009. According to their site it's a "unique opportunity for new and expectant parents and grandparents to explore and shop for trendy baby fashions, décor and so much more! Community resources and support services will be on hand to answer questions for new and expecting parents." belliestobabiescelebration.com Pre-registration at their site required if you want to go!
