New York Subway

Rated this place:

520 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M5V2B3

Submarine sandwich: They're so huge and wonderful. It's a shame that you see so many people in the subway restaurant next door. Give it a chance, people, you'll never go back.

Christie Pits Park

Rated this place:

Bloor St. W., Toronto, ON, M5H2N2

Public swimming pool: On any given night there's around 10-20 people in 3-4 groups if it's hot enough. It's basically an afterhours party but you can swim and go in the hot tub. Sick, Sick Pool.

Dutch Dreams Ltd

Rated this place:

78 Vaughan Rd, York, ON, M6C2L7

Ice cream: Picture this. Their milkshakes come in a 1L tub. It's not a cup, it's just a big 1L tub that they cut a little hole in the plastic lid of, and they give you that, and you can get said milkshake with pocket change (silvers and golds, but still... change). Everything is so fresh and huge. The CEO of baskin robbins has dutch nightmares.

The Red Room

Rated this place:

444 Spadina Ave., Toronto, ON, M5T 2G8

Sangria: Cheap and satisfactory. Everything is incredibly fresh for the price, and they have a great atmosphere. There's always great music too. All around, extremely decent sangria experience.

Hot Dog Stand

Rated this place:

Queen and Spadina, Toronto, ON

Hot dog stand: This corner houses the #1 hot dog stand in the city. Trust me, I read it on his sign. Now, please allow me to blow your minds. #2 is on the SAME CORNER. Believe you me, those titles are well deserved. Speed, Topping selection, Assertiveness. All of these bases and more are covered.

Mel's Montreal Delicatessen

Rated this place:

440 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON, M5S1X5

Greasy spoon for breakfast: The cure to a hangover, contrary to popular belief, is not to drink water and get rest. It's poutine. Mel's poutine.

Active Surplus Electronics

Rated this place:

347 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M5V2A4

Electronic surplus stores

Electronic surplus stores: The guy shouting at you outside in an iron maiden Tshirt isn't nuts, he's just really enthusiastic about this place with due cause. Great for any DIY project, even if you're not a pro, they can usually help you along with the basics.

Sonic Boom

Rated this place:

512 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON, M5S1Y3

Music store: You know how big costco is? it's like that, but instead of 12 gallon jugs of pickles, it's cds and records. Shell out for rare and collectible finds or stuff your collection full of their HUGE selection of used cds/lps.

LCBO

Rated this place:

446 Summerhill Av, Toronto, ON, M4W2E4

Lcbo: There are so few vintages locations as-is. This one is that and more. Just properly massive, great looking building, and the best selection you could ever ask for.

MOOG AUDIO

Rated this place:

442 Queen St. West, Toronto, ON, M5V 2B1

Music gear store: Even if you're not a pro, or even a hobbyist, it's an adult toy store. Huge selection of everything that is synth/dj. The Extremely helpful staff and low pressure atmosphere make it perfect, because they seem to understand what a big decision choosing your equipment is... unlike some stores... coughstevescough.

The Greek Corner

Rated this place:

382 College Street, Toronto, ON, M5T 1S7

After bar snack: They're open until 4am on fridays and saturdays, so it makes a great end to any big night out if you're in the area. Did I mention it's only 7.95 for a gyro, pop, and any side? No... I didn't... I left it for last because it was the most important part.

Thymeless Bar & Grill

Rated this place:

355 College Street, Toronto, ON, M5T 1S5

Dive bar: Maybe somewhere to be avoided on a night on the weekend, because it gets a bit rough, but during the week it's got a perfect patio, and it's usually just the right balance between busy and empty. Also, a little bird told me you may or may not be able to smoke certain cigarette alternatives on the patio...

Vintage Depot

Rated this place:

70 Kensington Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5T 2K1

Vintage clothing store: It's like someone went through every value village and brought all of the good stuff here. Every tee has the right balance of camp and style, there's really not that many shirts that I looked at and said "this is too tacky". Not to mention their huge selection of Hats, Leather Jackets, Windbreakers, Glasses... The list goes on and on.

Gandhi Roti

Rated this place:

554 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M5V2B5

Roti: I don't know how any other roti place in the GTA stays in business with this place around. I go for the mixed vegetable, but I hear the butter chicken is absolutely the best butter chicken ever. Believe the hype.

Hungary Thai Bar & Eatery

Rated this place:

196 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON, M5T2L6

Red Tea Box

Rated this place:

696 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M6J1E7

Tea: Amazing selections, and really helpful staff. Also, if you, or those who are accompanying you, aren't in the mood, they have an extensive menu full of tea-free options. It's like grandma's, except you have to pay for everything... so it's more like a tea store... but man...

Cheese Magic

Rated this place:

182 Baldwin St, Toronto, ON, M5T1L8

Cheese store: This place is killer. Fast and Frinedly staff, Wide selections, and great quality. Free yourself from the confines of the A&P deli section, you don't live with your parents anymore, so stop eating your parents' boring cheese. I mean, come on already.

Big Fat Burrito

Rated this place:

285 Augusta Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5T 2M1

Burrito: They're big, and they're fat, and you can't bring up variety as a measure of quality, because when you perfect all 5 of your burrito options, there's no need for further exploration. My dying wish will be for a big fat burrito, and I won't save any for god.

Dance Cave

Rated this place:

529 Bloor St. W., Toronto, ON, M5S1Y5

Dance club: Let's all face it. You always say you just went out "somewhere with your friends" to anyone who asks the next day, and if anyone mentions it as an idea, you immediately flex your vito powers, but you love it. Deep down you have a seething love for this crappy place. Over summer the crowds are weak, but year round you're guaranteed at least an OK time. p.s. Students don't pay with valid ID, which is solid.

Done Right Inn

Rated this place:

861 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON, M6J1G4

Dive bar: It was a hard time choosing this over the Daughter, but look, they take canadian tire money and x-rays as currency, so go break your arm, ask your grandpa for his CT stash, and get drunk. They have a hole in the bathroom that you can punch bigger, old school pinball, and a patio with solid tree coverage. Go here.

Labyrinth Lounge

Rated this place:

298 Brunswick, Toronto, ON, M5S2M7

Lounge: I'm a student, and I don't work that much, so I rarely have enough to spend money getting drunk outside of my own home, but with decent DJ's (usually) and 2 brutally cheap drink nights (wednesday and thursday), it's a great spot to meet up with friends, pre-drink for the night ahead, or just go to get drunk mid-week.

Massimo Pizza & Pasta

Rated this place:

302 College St., Toronto, ON, M5T1R9

Pizza: Don't bother ordering a full pizza, because it's actually cheaper to just buy slices, but if you can get past the backwards thinking and the gigantic after-club crowd, it will change the way you look at your thin, dry, brand name pizza slice. The things they do with a cheese slice make me question my existence.

  • favourite thing(s) at this place:

Toronto Islands

Rated this place:

Toronto, ON

Summer daytrip: I still don't trust the water at the beach, but it's great to just go for the whole day and chill out. Bring a soccer ball, a tent, and this many joints, and you may never want to come home. The ferry rides are loads of fun too, despite the fact that it only takes a few minutes to get there.
