Gourmet Thrift: A welcome alternative to the musty musts and dusty dusts of your typical vintage clothing shop, Vintage Depot is bright, well organized and stocked full of high quality items.I can’t speak much for the women, but the men’s side of things is very strong on leather jackets, western style button-ups and t-shits. For the most part, things seem to be in unusually good shape, which is a plus when putting in the time to dig out that one gem.As an added bonus, the store is flanked by Value Village and Salvation Army, making Lansdowne station a hot little thrift stop.

Super surplus in the east end.: Before you buy your next winter jacket, take stock of this hidden gem. My Tough Duck bomber with heavy canvas outer shell was only $99.95, built for extreme cold and made in Canada. Choose from a unique selection of brands and keep your giblets warm this winter. As a bonus, the store boasts an impressive selection of vintage work and western shirts, jean jackets, sneakers, boots and other goodies to ensure that you’re snappy under your parka.

Local jam space brokers: With the limited resources available for bands to find half decent practice space, you have to appreciate the Rehearsal Factory for doing what they do. Six locations in Toronto offer hourly, monthly and a limited number of live-in rooms. The most desirable location, in my opinion, is 322 Geary St. due to its cinder block walls that result in the best isolation between rooms among all the locations.Yes, vacant rooms are hard to come by, but there are always bands looking to share space and rent. So if you happen to land in a room you like, hold on to that sucker.

A new home for local comedy: Traversing the nightlife listings in Toronto’s local rags for something to do might seem daunting for many, especially those new to town. That’s why this brilliantly named new kid on the block is destined to be one of our city’s most successful hotspots.The brainchild of local comedian turned entrepreneur Gary Ridout, it surely doesn’t take much of a brain to figure out what this haunt’s all about and a glowing marquee ensures that passers by can’t miss it. Inside you’ll find the city’s newest and most unique, multi-use performance space. The diverse characters comprising Toronto’s rich comedy scene deserve a place to call home. And thanks to the sincere efforts of a few members of their own community, their comedy casa is a reality.

The jewl of the chain: Of the big three thrift store chains in the city, my greatest pulls consistently come from this supermarket-sized Value Village. Falling right on the Bloor subway line, regular visits are easy (and necessary if you’re obsessive like me), taking little time out of your day.Bigger is better in my opinion, so long as you have the time and focus to get dirty and dig. In this case, it’s size coupled with a seeming high turnover that makes this location worth visiting on the regular.In addition to the huge selection of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, you’ll find a modest stock of vintage vinyl, which has been the source of much joy as of late. And, a sizable electronics sections consistently has some interesting items. A much recommended stop for the career deal seeker.

From products you’ve never seen and conversation you can’t understand, Bennas is guaranteed to be an enjoyable addition to your shopping circuit.Anchored by a top-notch meat counter, Bennas also offers fresh breads and pastries in addition to shelves full of unique Polish items including pierogi by the bag. However, the real treasure here is the bucket of home made pickled cabbage, which is more delicious than you think, not to mention ridiculously good for your constitution.Be sure to stop by Bennas on your next trip to the Village. Well worth the drive to Whitby; this massive flea market is a deal seekers dream.Once your head stops spinning, you’ll be face to face with a treasure hunters’ playground. From thousands of records and books, art and kitchen stuffs to trinkets and oddballs, the possibilities are truly endless as to what you might uncover. If you do decide to go, take advantage of the time sensitive specials broadcasted over the PA and be sure to plan for a whole day of digging. Now, forget that you ever heard of this place…

Bargain basement vinyl: The sister store of Ric Collectables, a used vinyl emporium specializing in highly prized fare, the Bargain Basement seems to function as an outlet for overflow and less sought items. The current rules are as follows: all records with a sticker price under $15 are $2.50, while records priced over $15 are half off. I can’t even begin to list all of the gems I’ve uncovered here. Set aside an afternoon and dig… you’ll just have to beat me to the goodies.

It’s clear that the main focus, past and present, is high quality meats at prices that will have you second-guessing your monocle.Everything on display looks magnificent, particularly the beef which is consistently well cut and marbled. New digs, same vibes: Unpretentious and funky, 751 certainly retains the vibe of its previous incarnation as the Queens Head Pub. Cheap bottles and possibly the headiest highballs in the city, coupled with great theme nights and DJ’s prove this dark spot on the trendy Queen St. strip is catering towards a no bullshit, drink and dance clientele.

Conscious Wi-Fi: It’s always nice to have a free wireless near by when working at home has got you on the edge. And it’s even better when the provider serves you delicious coffee and Mill Street Organic when necessary.While there is a full veggie menu, I usually opt for the coffee and sweets, which help a great deal when you’re required to stare at a computer screen for significant allotments of time. If organic, socially and environmentally responsible ingredients are your bag then there are definitely treats to be had that will leave you feeling warm inside.

Somthing new in the Courthouse: If you have been inside any part of the Courthouse building on Adelaide, then you already have some idea as to the magnificence that waits inside the newer of Terroni’s two Toronto locations.The front bar greets you with floor-to-ceiling shelving stocked with house made food products, wine and, most impressive, a massive curing contraption packed with homemade prosciutto. And when you’re number is up, be carful walking to your seat as the three story high ceilings are bound to send the room spinning. A note on the menu prohibiting substitutions inspires confidence and respect, which is only reinforced by the ogling of your neighbours’ dishes. Every thing on the menu is expertly prepared with so many unique flavour combinations that you can’t help but try something new.And when you take a trip down to the restroom, take a look in the converted jail cells (now wine cellars) and be sure to ask your server to give your regards to the resident apparitions.

The location offers an amazing weekend special, cutting the daily rate practically in half. ‘Nuff said.If all you need is an economy class vehicle, your looking at between $50 and $65 depending on what the exact special is that week (so long as you can waive the daily insurance). Perfect for weekend getaways, or errands.In addition to the savings, a friendly, enthusiastic staff and complementary pick up and drop off make renting from Enterprise a no brainer.

Kensington community gear merchants: With the closing of Songbird Music, the importance of this Kensington market vintage gear shop and instrument service center has become clearer.While the stock of vintage guitars, basses and amps could never truly compete with Songbird and Capsule Music (the other heavy weight on the scene), the Boutique provided a great alternative for more budget conscious players, while still having some gems on hand. Making up for its lack of a drum shop is the keyboard room, which has always been Paul’s strong suit. You can always count on a high turnover of refurbished synthesizers, organs, electric pianos and vintage oddities moving through the store, justifying frequent website visits.Lastly, with a top-notch tech tweaking away in the basement, I believe that Paul’s Boutique will become even more of a favorite between beginner and professional musicians alike in Songbirds’ absence.

The picnic bench atmosphere doesn’t really lend itself to long engagements, more to quick sit downs and between-meal hunger fixes.

Make that turkey dance.: I had my 5th birthday at this Bathurst Street dive and I’d wager that they haven’t changed a thing since, from the funky shoes right down to the Hot Nuts. Thank goodness. There’s something I find unsettling about bowling emporiums that aren’t skuzzy. I don’t care what they can do with computer graphics these days. When I roll three strikes in a row, I want to see that pixilated turkey dance. All while drinking flat fountain pop, listening to 90’s dance classics rub up against the chirps of idling arcade games stashed in the corner.Who knows how much longer things will go on unchanged, so stretch out those hammies and get your bowl on.

With a small rotating cast of hip folk working the counter, you’ll feel like a regular by your third visit.In addition to the delicious Dark Horse coffee (by the cup or bag), the real treats are the baked goods made in-house every morning, likely still steaming for you lucky early birds. Many of the ingredients change with the seasons, so be sure to always ask what’s fresh that day.In the warmer months, you’re sure to find quite the neighbourly scene outside, often spilling over to the Film Buff benches two doors over. If you’re new to the area, make his buzzing coffee stop a ritual. You’re bound to settle in nicely.
