I've often described myself as a fat person on the inside due to my intensely epicurean love for food. When I'm not busy stuffing my face I study psychology and English at York, am the editor-in-chief of the York community paper the Excalibur, firespin, train muay thai and party like it's 1999.

Kom Jug Yuen Restaurant

Rated this place:

371 Spadina Ave, Toronto, ON, M5T2G3

Cheap, dirty and delicious: Kom Jug Yuen is my go-to spot on Spadina for cheap and orgasmically-delicious Chinese food. And the best part is, it's open late- which means it's perfect for a dirty, delicious MSG-laden meal after a night of partying. Their BBQ pork fried rice and wonton soup are absolutely to-die-for. And yes, if you stand up when you pee you'll probably have to duck in that grungy, midget-sized bathroom, but if you ask me that just adds to the charm of the place.

Vegetarian Haven

Rated this place:

17 Baldwin Street, Toronto, ON, M5T1L1

Truly creative: Just eating a meal at Vegetarian Haven makes you feel healthier.Although they're called Vegetarian Haven, all of the food they serve is actually vegan. I'm not a vegan myself, but eating at Veg Haven has made me truly appreciate how innovative vegans can be. Their fake ham and other fake meat products taste just like the real thing! And the atmosphere is very intimate and cozy. It's a little hard on the wallet, but their food is truly splendid. One of my favourites is a clay pot dish full of more kinds of mushrooms than I ever knew existed. One word of caution: their food can be a bit pricey for a student's budget.

Pho Mi 99

Rated this place:

1991 Finch Ave W #A, North York, ON, M3N2V3

Gem of Jane and Finch: This family-run Vietnamese restaurant is definitely the diamond in the rough of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood. I never thought I would brave walking 30 minutes from my home near York University to one of the roughest areas in the city for a bowl of soup, but Pho Mi 99 is definitely worth it.I was first drawn to the place when I heard that you can get a full meal for $5. Although their prices have gone up a dollar or two over the last year or so, the portions have also gotten bigger.Their delicious rice noodle soups are served in huge bowls, their spring rolls are golden and crispy and they serve incredible vermicelli and fresh mango milkshakes that keep me coming back week after week. And if that isn't enough, the service is extremely friendly and you never have to wait more than five minutes for your food.Definitely worth venturing into the infamous Jane and Finch hood for this one.

Oishi Sushi

Rated this place:

1325 Finch Ave West, Toronto, ON

Great food, terrible service: Let me begin with a preface: I'm really new to this whole sushi thing. The idea of stuffing raw fish in my face has never been very appealing to me. So when my Muay Thai group dragged me to Oishi Sushi after training one day, I was surprised that I actually agreed to try it- and liked it! Although I've heard people say that Oishi isn't the world's best sushi, the consensus seems to be that it's reasonably good. I have little basis for comparison, but I think it's fantastic. The best thing about Oishi, however, is the fact that lunch costs only $10 for all you can eat sushi AND a Chinese buffet (dinner is $15). Warning: access to this much food can be rather dangerous, so remember to wear some draw-string pants and arrive on an empty stomach. My favourite thing about frequenting buffets now that I'm a "mature adult" is that I can eat all the green tea ice cream I want before dinner! But there's definitely a catch. While the food is cheap and the sushi tastes great, this place has some of the worst service I have ever endured. First of all, they have a tendency to "forget" part of your order when they think that you won't be able to eat that much. You have to remind them frequently that you're still waiting on part of your order, and sometimes they conveniently act like they don't understand what you're saying. My recommendation is to hit this place when they're not really busy. They open at 11 a.m. most days, so I usually aim for going nice and early, before the noon rush. They tend to service you better when it's dead.
