Faves (9)
Enwave Theatre
231 Queens Quay W., Toronto
Fave Picture Have seen the Adelheid Solos there, choreographed & performed by Heidi Strauss. The sleek appearance of the interior and the minimalist take on equipment created an exceptional focus on the center of the stage and with it an intriguing deception: one perceived the performer in every new frame as emerging like deus ex machina, even in the absence of sound or motion. That is, one took a still life for a depiction of heavenly fury. (Subtract board, table and chairs and dim the light in the picture)

vegetarian haven
17 Baldwin Street, Toronto
Fave Picture They really know how to work with vegetables. Doing so they show an abundance of insightful ideas.

Recently, I discovered Leslieville, which is located east of the River Don centered around Queen East. Allegedly, it is the burgeoning neighbourhood in town. I very much like the attitude with which it comes across: somewhere in between 'who gives a crap anyway' and 'one day it's going to be big, really big'. Certainly prone to be taken over by the wealthy hipsters as soon as the development shows. Brunch and shopping (clothes, furniture) are refreshingly unpretentious.

fleurtje
764 Queen W, Toronto
Fave Picture Have you seen the albino squirrel in Trinity Bellwoods Park? I am still awaiting that to happen. I have come across the scaredy squirrel, though. In nearby fleurtje (now moved to the Distillery District) they sell Melanie Watts' books. Sort of the perfect gift for my friends' little kids. Actually, the boutique is rather known for its bags and t-shirts.

Sage Cafe
166 McCaul, Toronto
Fave Picture Perfect light lunch for less than 10 bucks. Although crowded during lunch hour it has atmosphere, which helps a lot to make yourself believe that lunch is not just something in between, but rather a crucial event of the day.

Tommy Thompson Park
1 Leslie Street , Toronto
At the southern-most peak of the man-made peninsula known as Leslie Street Spit one can find a lighthouse (the only active one in the city of Toronto). Standing there on a stormy spring day it feels like looking out onto the ocean rather than onto a lake. (I don't give you a picture. You've got to go see for yourself).

Tafelmusik
varying locations, Toronto
For a European to experience a performance of e.g. Biber's mystery sonatas in Canada is quite a sensation in itself. On top of that I - as a layman - would say that the ensemble as well as the soloists do quite a solid job.

Chinese Traditional Bun
536 Dundas W, Toronto
The buns - the one reason to go there - are almost invariably excellent. As for the atmosphere I like the indifference of the staff who seem to be concerned more with the food than with the customers. (You can watch them make the buns if you so like).

Stonemill Bread
St. Lawrence Market, Toronto
Fave Picture Located on the lower floor of the market. Judging by the crowd it draws every Sat morning the bread is extremely popular. I like the place for the breadrolls, muffins and pretzels. The latter are as close as I've gotten so far to the Austrian or Bavarian original.
