Way to get to granville island: Go by boat! Fun way to get around false creek- and check out the waterfront. There are two companies that hit differnt stops on both sides of the water. Rain or shine. And the boat captains will help you with your stroller.

Acacia Fillo Bar Cafe

Rated this place:

1103 Denman Street, Vancouver, BC, V6G2M7

Baclava: Not the sticky honey dripping greek kind- more like the middle eastern style with nutty centre and flaky buttery filo. many many other filo delicacies on offer here- including filo pockets stuffed with lamb, brie, steak or seafood, served with roast potatoes and fresh yogurt. YUM.

The Georgia Straight

Rated this place:

1701 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V6J1Y3

Newspaper: Free every Thursday, the calendar of events, restaurant guide and concert listings is must for everyone visiting the city. Plus the political slant is not managed by giant megacorp. The quality of the writing is very high, every issue contains interesting and relevant articles. The staff has the pulse of Vancouver's entertainment and foodie scene, and guest commentaries by such writers as Naomi Klein and Gwen Dyer provide brain food. I trust their movie reviews more than any other

Joe's Cafe

Rated this place:

1150 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, BC, V5L3X2

Old school coffee shop: No pretense, all substance. Best Hot Chocolate in the City, and good everything else. Very tasty made- to order bunwiches as well. A spot to watch whatever soccer match is on, or just watch the world go by.

No Frills

Rated this place:

1030 Denman St, Vancouver, BC, V6G 2M6

Grocery store: President's Choice products, the best supermarket prices in town- SIGNIFICANTLY lower than Safeway or IGA, and a friendly staff that has been working at this location (Denman place Mall) for years. Best option for general groceries in the West End. Un- snooty.

The Irish Heather

Rated this place:

217 Carrall Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B2J2

Place to drink guiness: Billed as a "Gastro pub," the food here compliments the ale far more than most- a very inviting, creative menu: traditional pub fare with a refreshing twist. Great authentic atmoshpere, truly cool (and rare for Vancouver) back alley patio.

Vanier Park

Rated this place:

1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver , BC, V6J 3J9

Shakespeare festival: A unique night, or afternoon out. Every season a different selection of plays. Tent venue location near Kits Beach is spectacular, particularly at the Main Stage, where the backdrop is open to the sky. As the scenes change, the sun sets. Beautiful! The quality of the performances is always very high, and the interpretation of Shakespeare's work is both innovative and true. Highly recommended.

Tiny Tots at the Vancouver Symphony

Rated this place:

127 2nd Avenue East, Vancouver, BC, V5T1B4

Cultural event for the under 5 set: This concert series (3 times a year + a Christmas show) is a great way to experience classical music in a fun, explorative way with your baby/ toddler/ small child. Held at the Vancouver Playhouse, this series has for the past few years featured "Lisa and Linda," a duo of performers/ educators who reinterpet classical composers for little ears. "A move-a-long, sing-a long show."

Robson Gourmet Butcher

Rated this place:

1610 Robson Street (Robson Public Market), Vancouver, BC, V6G1C7

Banana Leaf

Rated this place:

3005 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V6K2G9

Malaysian restaurant: Very authentic food, so many delicious choices on the menu it is hard to choose. Best to go with a small group so you can sample many dishes! A selection of appetizers make a wonderful meal as well. There are two other larger locations in Vancouver; the Denman location is quite small so going early or on a weeknight to avoid long waits is a good idea.

Motherhood Maternity

Rated this place:

2146-2148 W 4th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6K 1N6

Place to buy a nursing bra: My girlfriend and I went on a fast and furious quest to find the best nursing bras in the city, and came up sadly short. Not much on offer. We discovered that Motherhood Maternity had the best selection of nursing bra's by far. Though their maternity fashions are hit and miss, the hits got worn again and again, and were passed on to friends, so worth a look pre and post partum! And remember, breast is best, y'all.

Stanley Park

Rated this place:

Georgia Street, west end, Vancouver, BC, BC V6J 5L1

Lost lagoon nature house, Nature walk in the city, Otters, Playground, Seals, Second beach pool, The: Backs onto Lagoon Drive @ the end of Robson Street, entrance on Lagoon Loop trail. great place to take young children- or any nature lover, lots of info provided.

The Lost Lagoon Loop: A surprising variety of wild life in a small area, minutes away from downtown. Easy for young children to walk around, path okay for strollers. Can connect up to longer walks/ hikes around seawall or through the centre of the wooded area of the park. The nature house on the Lagoon trail has activites for kids and some great information about all the critters living in and the many different ecosystems of Stanely Park.

It is quite an experience to come across this scrurrying family of wild otters who travel via waterways, drain pipes and culverts all throughout stanley park! they pop up in lost lagoon, third beach, and other otter hot spots.

(Between the Aquarium and the Rose Garden) Although the equipment is a bit older than most, there is a small scale climbing area for tiny tots and a larger one for big kids, 4 baby swings big people swings, and it gets MUCH less traffic than the Second Beach playgrounds, so less turn taking, rowdiness etc. Plus, location is surrounded by trees and lawn, so good place for hide and seek, squirrel watching, pinecone collecting etc. Also there is an Eagle's Nest nearby!

If you walk the seawall when the tide is high, especially on an overcast or rainy weekday, you have a good chance of sighting harbour seals, who will swim right up to the seawall walkway.

Crazy but fun on a hot summer day, a slice of heaven on a cooler day when you may almost have it to yourself, and can float, looking up at the eagles, gulls, and clouds.

As a local with kids, a yearly membership is a no-brainer. There is so much to see and learn, and a great toddler- preschooler section with free music/ theatre programs in the mornings. As a tourist- go off season or low times if you can as it gets crazy-busy.

Has a secluded feeling despite proximity to downtown- great views and good swimming in summer. in spring, fall and winter a very peaceful place for a walk or sit on a log, looking out at the waves.

In winter, the small marsh land of Lost Lagoon and the beaches around Stanley park are temporary home to many species of migrating water fowl. The variety of bird life at least quadruples during the fall/ winter, and some very exotic species can be spotted mingling with our local ducks and geese. Bring a bird book and binoculars and be an urban bird nerd!

Ralph Shaw

Rated this place:

105-1035 Pacific Street, Vancouver, BC, V6E 4G7

Busker: He makes me hum, want to strum a ukulele, and I giggle every time at the corny old puns in the songs he sings. A truly oldfashioned performer. My son loved him so much we bought his CD and it is a regular now. "Ukele Lady" is our favourite. You can catch him mid-morning - 11:00 ish on Fridays at Granville Island in the wee square in front of the french bakery.

Coal Harbour

Rated this place:

Vancouver, BC, V6H3H4

Coal harbour water park, Walk for toddlers: Safe, fun environment for young children or even babies. great places for parents to sit and watch- with added bonus of coal harbour views. no gimicks for kids to fight over, just wet clean fun! also nice but expensive restaurant overlooking, if you have older kids you could theoretically sip something tall and cool on the patio while your younglings frolic in the spray below!

From the entrance of Stanley Park to Canada Place, the Coal Harbour waterfront is a beautitfully developed walkway with many things to interest little ones: boats, seaplanes landing and taking off on the water, waterfalls and ponds, + grassy areas to run and play. Good cafes to stop at along the way.

Manicure/ pedicure: Not glamorous, but just what you need. Cheap- cheaper early in the morning- great basic service- fab nails. Staff are friendly, efficent and know their craft. Lots of seating so good to book with a friend or 3, 4.... walk ins usually ok but they are justifiably popular on weekends.
