I can't believe I've never been here before - we just went here for the first time this weekend. Admission wasn't as expensive as I was imagining and it was just lovely inside. I was in pure heaven... I just walked along sniffing the whole way: so many wonderful scents! A real vacation for this pregnant lady with an over-sensitive nose - who has become accustomed to the daily onslaught of cigarette smoke, body odor, the seafood section of the grocery store, and poopy diapers. The maze was a fun surprise too! And afterwards we enjoyed ice cream at a little table by a pond. The only let-down was the children's garden - not much there unless we read the map wrong! So many paths all over the place, you can have a different visit every time.

I feel like a garden needs to appeal to all your senses, it needs to be a truly sensual experience. You need to be able to smell the flowers, touch the grass, see all the fabulousness, hear the birds or kids or insects or water or whatever, and of course have something tasty to bring it all together. In many gardens they put up fences out of necessity. There is nowhere to sit and all the senses other than sight are curtailed. Its like being in a museum of a garden. Not so here.

It's a lovely splash of colour in the midst of the vast garden, like something out of a fairytale.

Such an array of rare and beautiful woody plants and perennials. A well laid out path system helps you experience it all. Some of the biggest gunnera I've ever seen.
