The Beguiling kind of rocks. On the first floor: An old-school bookstore, stuffed to the gills with indie comics and graphic novels of all kinds; it feels a bit like a library, with overflowing wooden bookcases and the distinct musk of paper. Upstairs, a less cluttered brighter shop carries superhero comics and the like. And yes, they plan the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, which you should go to.

This was my first comic shop, where I nervously developed my snooty taste for obscure graphic novels. While technically Birkemoe and Butcher do sell Marvel and DC titles, Spidey and the Hulk are tucked away on the 2nd floor, next to the nasty hentai. They specialize in Seth, Chris Ware, Joe Sacco, Daniel Clowes, Julie Doucet... not so much caped crusaders. Proud creators of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, they are popular with local comic creators and sell original art. A great place to shop.

It's a cozy little shop stuffed to the rafters with comics and books about comics & art. Carries all the essential alternative comics in addition to the superhero stuff. Great for browsing and finding new comic books.
