Well Tea & Asian Cuisine

Rated this place:

5728 University Blvd, Greater Vancouver A, BC

Well Tea & Asian Cuisine – Vancouver, BC

Well Tea & Asian Cuisine – Vancouver, BC: The enclave that is the University Village is an interesting microcosm of the perceived general populace of students who attend this institution. Set in this two block area, the overwhelming majority of retail space is taken up by places to eat… with many of them are ethnic. This outlet of Well Tea also has a place to eat in, its in an area accessible by a steep climb up some stairs to the second floor. I’ll take Well Tea for what it is, another good, quick and easy place to grab a cheap meal when I’m in a hurry or just passing by.

Toyo Sushi

Rated this place:

2211 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC

Toyo Sushi - Vancouver, BC

Toyo Sushi - Vancouver, BC: The menu at Toyo Sushi is all-encompassing and fits the mold of what many people in North America would expect from a restaurant serving Japanese cuisine. Being a Korean-run operation, there was also a single page at the back of the menu listing some staple Korean dishes. If there were some system on which I would sort and thus rate all of the numerous sushi serving places in the GVA, I would probably slot Toyo Sushi in the mid-range. Clean, decent nigiri that is done with a touch that would suggest its more than a dine-and-dash-takeout-joint level and best to give it the respect of a dine-in, but obviously not quite up there with the best on offer in the region.

Book Kyung Dan Jeoun Korean

Rated this place:

1638 Robson St, Vancouver, BC, V6G1C7

Book Kyung Ban Jeom – Vancouver, BC

Book Kyung Ban Jeom – Vancouver, BC: As one of the more spacious and better naturally lit Korean restaurants on Robson, Book Kyung Ban Jeom is very inviting when you glance in from the sidewalk and enter the main foyer. If you are open to trying the Korean twists on some Chinese-inspired dishes, this is a solid place to venture out of your Korean food comfort zone.

Trahn Xuan

Rated this place:

2200 Nanaimo St, Vancouver, BC

Trahn Xuan – Vancouver, BC

Trahn Xuan – Vancouver, BC: This place serves Northern Vietnamese food that is not pho-centric…as a matter of fact, in spite of the signage on their window that declares they offer pho, they don’t actually serve it. They have a small menu – less than ten dishes listed on the photocopies taped up to the wall. Their specialties are bahn cuon (Vietnamese Rice Rolls), bun oc (Freshwater Snail Soup) and bun rieu cua (Crab Cake and Seafood Soup). it.

Spice Islands Indonesian Restaurant

Rated this place:

3592 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC

Spice Islands Indonesian – Vancouver, BC

Spice Islands Indonesian – Vancouver, BC: Recently lauded in a local city magazine as the top restaurant choice in a strange and contestable category dubbed as “best other asian”, Spice Islands Indonesian Restaurant fills a unique niche on Vancouver’s far west side, with a quaintly decorated room fitting to the type of clientele living in the area. With not much in the way of competition for authentic Indonesian cuisine, it would seem Spice Islands has captured solid footing in this space.

Long’s Noodle House

Rated this place:

4853 Main Street, Vancouver, BC

Long’s Noodle House – Vancouver, BC

Long’s Noodle House – Vancouver, BC: This endearing hole-in-the wall has become a regular spot for me. Their take on Shanghai cuisine is generally excellent and humbly innovative. The service is also excellent – Sandy, co-proprietor and server could be one of the best servers I have ever seen: friendly, knowledgeable, fast and efficient. They have a small and very focused menu (not the nearly 200 items you often would see in a Chinese restaurant in this town)…and everything I have had there over the years has been very good…and inexpensive. This is the kind of place that exemplifies the type of restaurant that Vancouver does best.
