Eco-friendliest Cleaners

Local eco-heroine Adria Vasil taught me a new thing or two about dry cleaners in her fantastic book Ecoholic. I learned that “PERC-free", “organic” and “environmentally friendly” dry cleaners also use pretty harsh stuff to get my grime out (less like green washing more like greenwashing). She pointed me in the direction of "wet cleaning" and I went looking. Having found Dove Cleaners I now pay more but feel better. Wet cleaning does not mean that they throw your clothes into just some old washer. It's actually a new-fandangled system from Europe. Wikipedia says something along the lines of "wet cleaning employs computer controlled washing machines that use biodegradable soaps and conditioners while using various types of pressing equipment for different fabrics." Most things that need to be dry-cleaned can go through this gentle process. Just ask the staff and they will let you know. Dove's website also says that their facilities exceed all local and global environmental legislation. On top of the eco-perks (rather than PERCs), they provide seriously good service. Any item you bring in to be cleaned will be inspected and minor alterations performed for free if needed (they'll even replace/fix broken and loose buttons).
