Bagel heaven

Rated this place:

A great thing to do on a Saturday morning is to head down to St. Urbain to get some of their freshly baked bagels. Watch the staff use long wooden paddles to insert and remove the bagels from the traditional brick oven. Then hurry home to eat your purchases while they’re still warm. Yummm. The big sellers are poppy seed and sesame seed, although they also offer other flavours, such as cinnamon raisin, onion garlic and whole wheat. In addition to their bagels, St. Urbain sells bagel chips and other related snacks, plus cream cheese and a soy-based alternative to cream cheese called Tofutti.

A great bagel is a great bagel

Rated this place:

There’s something special about a bag of warm bagels. And even more special is being able to see the fiery, brick heaven that they fell from. I could care less about entering into debates with bagel loyalists. The bottom line is that a great bagel is a great bagel, and this is a great bagel. Catch my bagel? If you’re on the go and in the know, grab sandwich with cream cheese, red onion, cucumber, smoked salmon and a crack of pepper. Sesame or poppy seed, you ask? Sesame, silly! And what if the meshpucha is coming over for Sunday brunch? Cream cheese, tuna and egg salad are all available in bulk. And be sure to check the fridge and racks for other great products including Neal Brothers corn tortillas and amazing salsa.

St. Urbain Bagel Bakery

Being a native Montrealite, I'm still going to have to disagree with their "Montreal-style" claim (they're not dense/skinny enough), but this is nevertheless the BEST place to get fresh bagels in Toronto. I can't even tell you how excited I get about the fresh multigrain bagels. If I were a badly trained puppy, I'd probably pee a little bit.

Bagel

Rated this place:

Mmmm... steamy windows! The bagels are so hot and fresh that the windows are always damp. Love it. The shop on Eglinton is tops, but the St Lawrence Market stand will do in a pinch. The bagels are amazing Montreal-style: small, chewy, sweet and dense. Perfection.

Put a bagel from these guys next to a real Montreal bagel, trust me, nobody could tell them apart.

Bagel shop

Rated this place:

When I'm at the St. Lawrence Market, I always like to pick up fresh bagels at St. Urbain and then freeze them so I can take them out and eat them whenever I want. Love the sesame and poppy seed variety.
