Some Say it's the Best Burger in the City...
Rated this place:
...I say it's organic! I might seem like a meataholic if you've read all my other meaty reviews but I try to limit my consumption of our animal friends to those places that offer the slightly more ethical option. And Allen's is one of those places. You might think that after working there for almost two years (disclaimer...I do not work there any more and have no vested interest in the success of Allen's, except for the sake of all my fun and kooky friends that work there) that I wouldn't be able to look at one of those things (the burgers) after serving a million and eating about half that (no, I didn't really eat half a million burgers...really just an occasional treat, my eco-superego jumped in to make me clarify). But I can. And I do. These treats are from organic local cows and the meat is never frozen. You can top them with simple classic ingredients but my fave combo is a medium burger with blue cheese, sauteed onions and dijon mustard. Watch out for your breath! Beyond the burgers, Allen's is doing an excellent job of showcasing top quality organic meats from beef steaks, elk, bison and even muskox. These are locally sourced when possible (Beretta is a common name on the specials menu). To compliment the meat Allen's offers a fully VQA winelist predominantly Ontario with a smattering from BC. Not a wine on the menu from any other country...can't tell you how many people would still say, "Oh, only Ontario? well I'll just have something else". John Maxwell does a fine job searching out and selecting the best of what our local viniculture has to offer. The beer selection is also not shabby. The patio of course is stunning in the summertime.
