What is Bike Pirates?

Rated this place:

Bike Pirates

Bike Pirates is an autonomous organization whose mission is to empower cyclists and make bicycles more accessible to the general public of Toronto. Volunteer-run and operated, Bike Pirates provides a do-it-yourself work space to the cycling community and Toronto and towards social justice on the road. Bike Pirates is ...located in Toronto, Canada. 1292 Bloor Street How We Achieve Our Mission -Provide low cost bikes and parts to the community -Provide mechanical instructions to cyclist -Provide a depot for bike and bike part donations -Gift bicycles to local charitable organizations -Support local cycling groups through adaptive workshops History Bike Pirates opened on July 1st, 2006 as an autonomous, anarchist collective, run by local activists and bike punks alike who want to have a space to fix their bikes and to help others to do the same. Originally located at 457 Bathurst Street, with limited hours and gradually increasing resources we helped hundreds of people get their bieks running, learn to build bikes from the frame up and even gotten people out of their cars and onto their first bicycle. In August 2008 Bike Pirates moved to its current location at 1292 Bloor street, and also became an official non-profit organization, with a board of directors. Most collective decisions making is done by a large group of volunteers, who take on the many important tasks associated with running the space; from opening and closing the shop, to accounting, to collecting bicycle donations. Volunteering Anyone can volunteer at Bike Pirates. While we do need volunteers with wrench experience, we require other hands on deck to keep the space afloat. Folks who are willing to do outreach, pick up donations, build cool stuff (like a new kitchen), sort parts, and greet people at the door.

DIY bike repair empowers

Rated this place:

Bike Pirates

The idea behind Bike Pirates is amazing. The organization's mission is to empower cyclists and make bicycles more accessible. They do this quite ingeniously, by providing a do-it-yourself work space where people can come in to fix their bikes either entirely on their own or with the assistance of the helpful volunteers who run the place.

The small storefront near Bloor and Lansdowne (moved from the original location on Bathurst at College) is full of tools and a basement full of spare parts. The thing is, the folks at Bike Pirates really do expect you to fix up your own bike, so if you're intimidated by the prospect, be aware of the fact that they'll help you and share their collective know how, but you'll have to get your hands a little dirty as well.

Bicycle repair & parts shop

Rated this place:

Modern society makes it very tough to be a pirate. They've got the oceans and Internets on a lockdown, so pirates have to hide, or live in Switzerland. Well, Switzerland's nice, I'm sure, but here's a little place that openly swashbuckles, by which I mean, provides you a place to fix your bike and pay by donation. I've used their services once and learned a lot about how my bike works.
