This is one of my favourite places in my neighbourhood. It is a great place to meet up for a coffee/tea and chat or do to some work at the long table or read the magazines/ papers they supply. Some extra bonues - they have free wifi and put in additional outlets- Thank you for that!!). The owners and staff are really approachable and friendly. They have variety in their milks and carry a range of delicious baked goods.I also like that they are supporting creative people in the neighbourhood providing a space for selling. Let's put it this way... after reading some of the reviews that were negative about Scratch, I registered myself on Our Faves so I could respond. I was especially suprised that one of those reviewers went to the effort to submit a negative review without ever making the effort to check out Scratch for themselves. Luckily I check things out for myself before deciding on things. Thanks again Eden and Hans for a great space to hangout in.

Great Neighbourhood Cafe

I just stumbled across this place and really like it! It is very family friendly, they are O.K. with strollers and have some toys to occupy little kids. They also offer a variety of kid friendly flavoured smoothies. On the adult side, the coffee is very good as are the baked goods, which they say are made from scratch (I just got the joke).

Oh, there are so many reasons why I love Scratch. Eden and Hans are super friendly and fun. They make excellent americanos, at the perfect temperature with the right ratio of hot water to espresso. The place itself has great furniture, with a long dining room table that I would want for my home. See, that's what the cafe has - a nice homey feeling.

Think "can't afford Toronto real estate downtown so compromised and bought a few blocks north in midtown". The gestalt is organic, natural and local with warm & welcoming staff, primo Intelligensia coffee, exposed brick walls, large communal table, cozy sofa and chairs you melt into (coziness is guaranteed, they are nap tested), lots of good art on the walls and free WiFi. The Chai Latte is transcendent and the biscotti are so good you'll want to throw them a party. Scratch is the local hangout

my favourites are also banana chocloate chip muffins and pumpkin muffins, but all the food is made from scratch by local artisinal bakers so i'm sure that whatever you have will be good. the staff are good company and give the place a good vibe. it feels like a bit like Cheers meets The Central Perk. the owners are warm, genuine people. me likey!

Well, I thought this was an information site and not a chat site but since the thread has started I’m going to weigh in. In HillCrestPI’s, defense I can confirm that this places is below the standards of our neighbourhood. I can also confirm that I agree with a good many things that have been said about this place because I have been there and I have “experienced” the so-so java and the so-so staff and what you consider fab…is just not. “Mythical” Buzz indeed, there have been many negative things said about this place that are probably not true but there have also been a good many negative things about this place that are proven to be true. Regardless of the juvenile statement which Tamayokucha feels the need to bandy about it does not change the truth regarding this place. Ultimately, one can reason that Tamayokucha statements represent something less than a fully formed personality. Perhaps your daddy can buy you a new one.

Opposite to HillcrestPI's review I have heard great things about Scratch and since I actually go there I can confirm this. The staff, coffee, baked goods and art are great. The space is fab and I love hanging there with my friends.

Hey HillcrestPI...since you haven't even been to Scratch, are you always influenced by mythical buzz? Tell me...who picks out your clothes in the morning...your partner or your mother??

So, I've heard some pretty negative things about this place from neighbors and others. It Looks like BackonFriday has something to say...but not much. It's just around the corner from our house, well four blocks, but I haven’t stopped in because of the buzz that it is to be avoided. I gotta ask, why are the posted recommendations on here so exceedingly stellar when I’ve heard just the opposite?

Perfect little indepedent shop in an neighbourhood that is growing and begging for creativity! Opened in May 2008, Scratch makes great coffee and treats. Tea bags and coffee beans for sale, too. Cool stone banquet table with sun pouring in the front window in the morning. Friendly staff. And... The walls and cabinets are adorned with local arts and crafts... paintings, collages, jewellery, shirts, knits ... all for sale, too. Support this inspiring local shop!
