#publicspacefail

Rated this place:

On foot, car, or public transit, I always avoid this intersection.

Bright, garish, and ugly - it's not doing what it's supposed to be doing - serving as an urban, public space. Could the city have made less of an effort in it's creation? It's just barely a step up from being completely paved. I would never tell a friend, "Just meet me at Dundas Square".

I prefer my sense of community to come without a sponsorship by Astral media.

revitalized city hub

Rated this place:

Yonge-Dundas Square

Before Yonge-Dundas Square was created, the intersection at Yonge and Dundas was not pretty – run down, questionable activities, homeless harassing tourists (of course, some of it still exists)… and thousands of visitors, locals and students pass through it every day. It was time to do something with this urban space. Not everyone likes the outcome, but I do. The square is a great space, especially during the warmer months when it hosts huge festivals, outdoor concerts and markets. And across the street the new Toronto Life Square, featuring shops and restaurants like Milestone’s and Jack Astor’s, plus the AMC movie theatre, is only going to help the area grow into the awesome tourist hub it is.

Dundas-schmundas square

Rated this place:

The controversial square located in the corner of Yonge and Dundas Sts. has had hasty beginnings as a Times Square copycat and quickly relinquished its spot as a community outdoor space due to the vast corporatization and non-friendly by-laws of the square. Yet during the hot summer months, it’s an outdoor market and at times it hosts concerts for Torontonians and tourist alike. Kids are seen running in zig-zags on the fountains, while nearby Ryerson students are chain-smoking at the available seats.

Place to buy theatre tickets at half-price

Rated this place:

There's a special booth where you can buy tickets for half-price for certain shows, like Evil Dead The Musical, Spamalot and Dirty Dancing. We paid $35 each for $70 seats, whatta bargain! BUT you must attend the show the day of purchase, and when you make your transaction, you receive vouchers (not tickets) that reserve your seats. Then you exchange these vouchers at the theatre/venue for real tickets.
