The Grain that Nurtures!

Rated this place:

St. John's Bakery not only bakes outstanding breads and sweet treats locally, artisanally and organically, but they also employ those who need the support in our society. Their website promotes this quote "Bread deals with living things, with giving life, with growth, with the seed, the grain that nurtures." Must haves include your favourite sourdough selection, a cheddar-chive scone and their oustanding banana bread. St. John's is available at many of the Toronto farmer's markets - you'll know it's them when you see the long queue (it's worth waiting in) - or at their location, and is the also the chosen bakery of many of the finest Toronto restaurants. Breaking bread has never tasted or felt this good!

Bread that gives back

Rated this place:

St. John’s Bakery

St. John’s Bakery makes fantastic artisanal bread from organic ingredients. And they provide apprenticeship and employment to homeless and at-risk individuals. Their wide selection of breads includes sourdough rye, olive cilantro, walnut raisin and red fife, among others. In addition to the Broadview location, St. John’s products are also carried at a number of farmer’s markets, stores and restaurants throughout the city. See www.stjohnsbakery.com for a complete list. As well as their delicious loaves, the bakery also offers a selection of cookies, flavoured scones (the cheddar chive ones and the chocolate ginger ones are especially good), sweet breads, cakes, puddings and tarts. And they do gift baskets—pre-set and customized. Makes a great gift for the holidays!
