Guu is here to stay
Rated this place:
What can I say - Guu Izakaya is here to stay in Toronto. Hailing from Vancouver - love it or hate it - the place doesn't take reservations, gets packed to the brim by 5:30pm every night, you have to wait in line outside (rain or shine) at the awful strip mall, and you get kicked out after two hours - but it seems like locals think it's worth the wait. And it is. For terrific prices, you can try nearly everything on the menu - and yes, everything on the menu is worth trying at least once - since it's all tapas or snack-style Japanese bar food. Get classics like edamame, miso soup, or agedashi tofu - or try some of the more interesting dishes like the Aburi Salmon (lightly seared salmon sashimi in ponzu), the Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), the Brie Cheese (deep fried brie squares with fruit sauce), the Black Cod Miso (tres Nobu), or Cheese BimBimBap (a fun take on the classic Korean dish that you will love because it makes you think of a really good risotto). Although there's a bit of a heavy hand when it comes to the mayo, Guu is great for variety and makes accessible the small inventive Japanese dishes usually found only at some of the high-end Japanese restaurants in Toronto until now. Original Guu cocktails, shouyu, sakes, vodka sodas, and Sapporo on the drink list. Definitely worth a try!
