One-of-a-kind Korean table-top cooking
Rated this place:
During high school, all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ places after 10pm was all the rage. It wasn't until attending U of T that I discovered Joons Restaurant and a totally fun and different style of Korean tabletop cooking. I mean, who ever thought of throwing rice cakes with spicy sauce and topping with cheese?
Located in Koreatown, just west of Honest Ed's at Bathurst and Bloor, Joons serves an array of the regular Korean specialties: bulgogi, kalbi, all kinds of "chigge" or stew, bibimbap and komjatang - but their specialty is their table-top cooking. Most tables come with a built-in stove located in the middle of the table where the cooking is done.
When you get a menu, don't wander too far off the first two pages where you are offered a variety of table-top combos. They all include napa cabbage but the difference is in the protein: chicken, seafood, beef and/or mixed. You get the choice of a teriyaki sauce, Joons Original Spicy or extra spicy and additional ingredients: rice cakes, noodles, cheese, greens and/or rice. They'll bring out the ingredients and cook on your table-top stove at your table until ready.
My pick is a chicken and seafood with Joons original spicy sauce, rice cakes, greens and cheese - with fried rice afterwards. They'll bring rice to your table and fry it up with all the delicious leftover flavours in the pan - one of the best parts. It's approx $7-10/person for the tabletop cooking but it's a fun meal for groups of 4-8. The also have another location at Yonge + Sheppard.
