Old school Chinese Canadian comfort

Rated this place:

This charming little Baldwin Village shop from a bygone era has been a neighbourhood favourite for decades. Yung Sing serves an array of authentic Chinese delights with a dose of Canadian influence, which is an indicator of how long it has been around. While the bakery is famous for its big char siu buns, it should also be recognized for its sweet treats. Their Chinese egg tart (daan tat) impossibly bridges the gap between the flaky pastry version found on dim sum trolleys and the pate brisee variety found in many Hong Kong style bakeries in the suburbs. I'm a lover of both kinds of egg tarts so I was easily won over by Yung Sing's creation. The sunshine yellow custard filling is smooth on the tongue and just sweet enough to alleviate those dreaded afternoon sugar crash symptoms.

Toronto's most unique Chinese bakery

Rated this place:

Yung Sing Pastry Shop

I'm proud to say that I've been coming to Yung Sing Bakery before I can remember - and though the threat of imminent closure has threatened this charming neighbourhood gem for decades on Baldwin street, Yung Sing Bakery has survived - and so it should. This home-style Chinese bakery is as authentic and unique as it gets in Toronto. Classic buns like fried rice buns, bbq pork, chicken with bamboo, and curry beef have been on the menu for years. One of their specialties are the classic dim sum dishes: har gow (shrimp dumplings) and siu mae (pork dumplings) which are always made to order - addictive and packed with lard, but comfort food at its best. Be sure to try their spring rolls, egg tarts, almond cookies, deep-fried glutinous rice balls, sweet sesame balls, and other tempting foods in the display window!

I'm coocoo for coconut buns!

Rated this place:

I was introduced to coconut buns here for the first time when I was like, 7. It was a revelation. A strange location for this shop, but they've survived for years baking out the cheapest little treats you can imagine. There's a bench out front, perfect for enjoying your pork buns in the summer, but the real charm comes from the half-sunken basement kitchen, which makes it look like the people who work down there must be tiny.

Chinese buns

Rated this place:

I love the bbq pork-filled savoury buns here. Cheap like dirt, portable, and yummy. We lived on these for lunches while working at Descant magazine - just up the street.

Barbeque pork buns

Rated this place:

Highly addictive and given this is the second time I mentioned barbeque pork buns, you know I am addicted. Two for lunch and you're set. Plus, Baldwin is great in the summer and in a perfect location (on my way home from work...ha ha!).
