‘grown-up’ restaurant

Rated this place:

It is the most delicious vegan food I have ever tasted. Maybe even the most delicious food I have ever tasted. Great atmosphere too.

Best Vegan Restaurant

Rated this place:

"Though, officially, our readers declared Fressen the city’s best vegan restaurant, we think the category should have been called “best place to take your vegan date if you want them to fall in love with you” instead.

Established in 2000 by chef Stephen Gardner, who also runs Urban Herbivore (64 Oxford), Fressen is, without a doubt, the swankiest vegetarian joint in town. Defying the crunchy-granola stereotypes associated with meat-free dining, Fressen offers playfully plated gourmet meals in a dining room with exposed brick walls, romantic lighting and comfy banquette seating. The tapas dinner menu is designed for sharing, with each item priced at $9, and includes a healthy assortment of salads, stews, starches and other veggie-based creations. From the spinach blinis in pepper purée to the chocolate-avocado terrine, the food is so rich and indulgent, you won’t believe it’s vegan..."

Vegan cuisine

Rated this place:

Considered a haven for food-conscious Queen West gourmands, Fressen serves vegan cuisine prepared from scratch using organic ingredients. Referred to as Toronto’s vegetarian fine-dining gourmet spot, Fressen makes carnivores consider switching teams. Wheat and gluten-free options are available, while the menu also offers pastas like the pesto-tossed spinach, gnocchi and veggies, beer battered tempeh "fish", seared homemade gluten-roast on yam with a wine and shiitake glaze, stews and more...

Tempeh-tastic

Fressen Restaurant

I'm not vegan, but I appreciate quality food and I certainly appreciate the creative approach with which the chefs at Fressen have tackled things like the totally egg and butter free brunch menu. Their use of spiced, grilled tempeh in place of bacon (or other, similarly savoury and crispy breakfast items) is terrific. It's so delicious I've tried to replicate the flavour at home. Sweet corn fritters are also such a hit that it's easy to forget anything is "missing" from the meal, because really, nothing is. At dinnertime my favourites are the squash ravioli and the seared polenta, both done up in rich, delicious sauces. Whether you're a vegetarian or not, this is a great restaurant - no qualifications.
