TINARS for TOTS

Rated this place:

Gladstone Hotel

This fall, Pages books introduced a junior version of their popular literary event playbill This Is Not A Reading Series (TINARS). On one Saturday morning every month, caregivers can enjoy brunch and witty presentations from some wonderful kid's book authors (Matt Hamil, Jeremy Tankard, Ruth Ohi) and the odd music jam (Totsapalooza). Toronto literary luminaries serve as hosts, including the unbeatable husband and wife hosting team, Don Kerr and Claudia Dey. It's a sunny, warm, feel-good kind of party. With books. Which are good for kids. And there's coffee.

A Hotel? It's so much more.

Rated this place:

The Gladstone Hotel is a great place in Toronto for so many reasons, aside from being a hotel. They have created unique spaces for musicians, artists, foodies and families...to showcase, perform and indulge. They support and promote local and organic eating ( by the way they have a FRY BAR...sweet potato, potato and taro too with tons of toppings). Harvest Wednesdays supporting field to table eating (yum) are not to be missed...you can check their website at www.gladstonehotel.com for their complete calendar of events...and while you are there, you'll know why you need to try the Gladstone.

All-in-one bar

Rated this place:

Did you ever have one of those friends who’s great at everything they try? The Gladstone is kind of like the bar equivalent. A great place to grab a drink with friends, have some tasty food, see a band, meet new people, sing karaoke and attend some not-so-typical events (ranging from burlesque shows to Taddle Creek readings.) And you could even make an entire night of it by staying over in one of the rooms upstairs. Their website is a great resource for finding out what’s going on each night/day and it even gives you a peek at some of the artist-designed rooms in the upstairs hotel.

A creative hub that inspires

Rated this place:

At the Gladstone, even Karaoke becomes art. Well, okay: If it's art you're looking for, the rooms upstairs might be a better bet. Yes, the Gladstone offers actual accommodations, and each room is designed by a different artist. For locals, there's the bar of course, and live music of course, and Harvest Wednesdays, and studio spaces for those creatively employed (or engaged, anyway). They also do weddings.

Anything but ordinary

Rated this place:

This unique, downtown restoration project, besides serving as one of Toronto’s few anit-chain hotel alternatives, has become a bustling hub for the local arts community. Old meets new with brilliantly organic integration resulting in the perfect multi-purpose venue for the colourfully creative. An assortment of event spaces ensure that any given weeks event schedule will have something of interest for everyone. And, if spending the night is in the cards, unique rooms, individually decorated by local artists, make a stay-over anything but ordinary. If all you’re after is a few beers, stop by the Melody Bar Thursday thru Saturday for the legendary karaoke nights, voted best in the city 4 years running.

Karaoke bar

Rated this place:

I don't sing but it is a great place to see some pretty good local talents work their vocal chords. A fine time for all... and, if you can work up enough guts, you could even have the mic - with the whole bar as your backup vocals!
