Great trails, not far from Toronto
Rated this place:
For those looking for a change of pace (read:a slower one), cross country skiing is an excellent workout. It has a reputation as being thrill-less amongst downhill skiiers; certainly, it doesn't offer the same instant gratification of jumping off a lift and flying down a mountain-side; but what no one tells you is that even a small hill on virtually edgeless cross country skis is a terrifying, adrenalin-pumping, life-reaffirming experience. Horseshoe has dozens of trails tailored to classic and skate skiing, suited to all levels of skiers. The trails are popular but I've never seen them too busy, and the staff here is so enthusiastic and friendly that you want to take them home and bake them cookies. (Note: the website says it's "less than an hour from Toronto", but in my experience it'll probably take you a little longer, unless you're starting from the very northern end of the city.)
