Japanese restaurant not serving sushi

Okonomiyaki are an underappreciated, simple Japanese dish. This restaurant has the look and feel of a small family restaurant or bar in Japan. The okonomiyaki are delicious and can be made vegetarian, the green tea is delicious and cheap. A great place to go before a matinee at the varsity or cumberland.

It's been there in that very same location (at the foot of the Charles Street West tower block) since 1978 - that's just a year after my family came over from Japan and moved into that very same building (subsidised apartments for international U of T students). Fond memories of my childhood. :)

The service is quick and efficient. You can watch the chef cook your meal. The menu is small (no sushi), but the food is fresh and full of flavour. I have been going there for 12 years and have never been disappointed. It's a great place to take those who want to try some Japanese food, but are not fond of sushi. My favourite dish is the beef Yakiniku.

These delicious savoury pancakes, chock full of your choice of meat or veg, and garnished with bonito flakes, nori, okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise, are a true taste of japanese pub grub.
