Fantastic French Fare

Rated this place:

Le Paradis Brasserie-Bistro

There is no other place in the city where you can get a generous serving of rognons de veau or ris de veau (that’s veal kidneys and sweetbreads) for only $14 or $17 a plate, respectively. Really good quality French fare for a bargain price is not just a rare thing in Toronto – it’s actually nonexistent. Except, thankfully, at Le Paradis. I love the service, the homey ambiance (I’m always tempted to scribble on the brown construction paper that they place over the table linens) and the ever-rotating menu. While some staples are always available, the rest changes frequently enough that you can’t really get bored. I always end up ordering some kind of innards (see above for delicious examples), and I love the fact that the wait staff always seems pleased with my adventurous palate. I once had a beef tongue in beet sauce that ranks among the top ten meals of my life.

French restaurant

Rated this place:

Great food and wine for a reasonable price. The food will not disappoint. Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine, tax and tip is as low as $140.

French bistro

Rated this place:

Packed on any day of the week, this French bistro deserves its popularity. While the starters & desserts are excellent, the mains (all reasonably priced at $17 & under) truly shine. The menu changes daily but tender braised lamb & veal shanks are often featured. The more adventurous meat eating diner would be wise to choose seared veal sweetbreads or grilled veal liver. Seafood specials are reliably fresh and tasty. Vegetarians beware: the menu is heavy on the animal products.
