Everything's More Fun On A (Pretend) Boat

Rated this place:

The Boat

Grandpa winked at me as he poured my heavily iced gin and soda. He is a member of the unpredictable cast of bartenders at The Boat, harshly contrasted with the onslaught of indie scenesters dancing around in their scuffed chucks in the middle of the room. Breaking out from this wooden centralized dance floor, is a thematic Portuguese restaurant reminiscent of a ship's deck. Round windows circulate the dancing arena, which is propelled by the fresh beats of the resident dj or a unique live performance. If you aren't a dance maven, there is plenty of banquet-esque seating and room for off-side mingling. In my opinion- a most pleasing combination of nostalgia and kitsch and off the cuff partying.

Rock the Boat

Rated this place:

The Boat's a second-floor Portuguese restaurant-turned-party hotspot in the lesser-traveled part of Kensington Market. The events include dance parties, rock shows, art and craft nights and all manner of so-called hip happenings. The drinks are moderately priced, the ambiance is kinda cool (it's like being inside a disco-themed pirate ship, without the skulls and booty chests) and door charges rarely exceed ten bucks. Don't be fooled by it's shoddy exterior. This place is a nice little party venue that attracts a lot of bang-up live music and some pretty decent dancefloor deejays.

Dance club

Rated this place:

It's dark and cozy and just the right size. I've been there for shows and dance parties of all types, and everything seems to fit there. The bartenders are sweet and it hosts a few interesting evenings.
