Heart of old town Toronto

Rated this place:

St. Lawrence Market

While not an old city by European standards, Toronto boasts several Georgian and early Victorian-era structures that once made up the core of the old city of York. At the heart of this old city was the market, and today Toronto's St. Lawrence Market still bustles from Tuesday to Saturday as one of Canada's premier destinations for epicurean delights. I recommend hitting the market early in the morning to avoid the crowds, and to load up on picnic supplies before spending the afternoon at the beach or exploring the ravines. See Full Post

St. Lawrence Market

If you're visiting this city you must see St. Lawrence Market if you haven’t been there yet. The hard-to-miss building is historical (established in 1803), and there's a huge selection of fresh vegetables, meats, cheeses, pastas, breads, sweets, flowers...you name it. Shop for groceries or stop by one of the vendors to grab lunch, a snack or a cup of coffee. You'll be amazed at how cheap it is considering the quality of the food. I love the energy of the market. All your senses are stimulated and it's heaven for foodies.

Ye Olde Torontoe Market

Rated this place:

Because (fresh) sliced bread is the biggest thing since Gmail. And because Toronto's equivalent to Montreal smoked meat, back bacon on a bun, doesn't get enough respect. (Also worthy of getting crumbs in your keyboard: Eggplant parmesiana, free samples at Alex Farm's cheese.) Yum.

A market like no other

St. Lawrence Market

There are so many things to do, buy and look at in the St Lawrence Market that it’s hard to pick a favourite. I love it for the Saturday morning farmers’ market, where incredibly fresh local produce, meat and eggs are all available (at quite reasonable prices, considering the quality).

On the other side of the street, where the permanent shops and stalls are, I love going to stock up on fancy mustards (try the samples at Anton Kozlik's stand and you’ll be converted forever) and eat giant veal sandwiches. Plus, it’s a terrific fish market where everything is always fresh, and the quality is top notch.

I love the St. Lawrence market because of the fantastic energy, and the great selection of produce, meat, seafood and cheese. I like how you can talk to the butchers and find out where the meat comes from. The organic north market is open on Saturday's and now the stunning Miele kitchen is open upstairs where they run cooking classes and workshops on Saturdays. I love the churrasco chicken sandwiches you can get on the first level!

Rated this place:

Grab some food and sit on a picnic bench on the upper level. Even though the view is a parking lot and some condos, it's a very peaceful feeling to eat your lunch under the sun's warmth with the occasional cool breeze.

Butcher shops

Rated this place:

The people are friendly and most of their stuff is from Ontario farms. A great place for buying meats like turkeys for Thanksgiving!
