really really good gelato.

Rated this place:

Il Gelatiere

For some of the best gelato in the city, make your way to Il Gelatiere. Located midtown at Mount Pleasant just south of Eglinton (right by Jules Patisserie and Thorbor's!), it's a favourite neighbourhood spot not to mention worth the drive - no matter where you are in the GTA! Be sure to get a scoop or two of their pistachio and hazelnut flavours - but for one of the most inventive - try the spicy chocolate. They also do coffee, crepes, and containers to go (offers better value than individual scoops). Seating inside at the front and back of the shop as well asa covered patio during the summer.

Truly awesome quality of gelato & SERVICE

Rated this place:

These guys have been Toronto's BEST gelato establishment for some time now, ever since tehy opened the reviews have been super and the lineups have been present. This truly speaks of the quality of their gelato and there awesome service. They have many flavours, and they are constantly rotating them depending on the season and and customer requests. They will even make a special batch just for you if you ask. Also if you have any allergies, these guys are great for keeping nuts away, from going to the back to get the "cleanest" of flavours to using new scoopers to even grabbing from the centre of the mound. The owners are all related, 1 big family, and of course they italian and know how to make incredible gelato. My family and friends have been going there for over 4 years now and they still seem to improve with every passing season. My favourite is the non-dairy chocolate, well any of the non dairy ones for that matter! Fragola (strawberry) is so creamy you wonder how they do it (for a non-dairy). They recently had a panceta (bacon) and avocado flavour. Wierd but good. Also must commend them on thier superb lattes. Each barista makes it a little different but hey thats the nature of the barista beast. The beautiful days make sitting on their patio all the worth while. There are not many days left so......One more thing, the place is always clean- not quite sure how they do it with all teh traffic and such, All of the flavour signs are in italian so don't get nervous, instead simply be prepared to ask for a translation, the staff will have no problem translating each and everyone. Maybe tehy should print some in English! This would save us all some time. I heard they are opening up a new location downtown somewhere, the downtown areas needs some good gelato. Not sure if they are open all year round, if anyone knows this please let me know how their stufff is in the dead of winter.

Terrible customer service

Rated this place:

I have never had a worse gelato experience than my trip to Il Gelatiere. I went with a friend and bought 1/2 kg of gelato. We walked in and asked which were dairy free (there were only around 8 flavours that fell into this category) and by the time we had asked for our 3rd sample, the woman at the counter snarled at us and asked if we planned on eating our entire 1/2 kg in samples. I sort of laughed, thinking she must be joking (isn't the whole gelato experience about being able to taste the selections before deliberating on a favourite?), especially because we were even sharing samples. When I asked to try the strawberry, she snapped that people never ask to try the "normal" flavours - we make them with fruit, so they taste like the fruit. But frankly, every gelato place is very different, and just because I like lemons doesn't mean I will like your lemon gelato. She said, people normally only request to try our good flavours, like chocolate (because I guess people don't know what chocolate ice cream is like). Whatever, she gave us the sample but by this point I was so pissed off by her attitude that we just ordered. At this point she said, which of you has the dairy allergy, and so my friend pointed at herself, and then she says to me, here, try this chocolate hazelnut, you'll like it. I was shocked. I don't even LIKE those flavours. I always order the fruit flavours. I never asked for the sample, and after she begrudged us the ones we ASKED for, she insisted on me taking one I DIDN'T ask for, that was about 5 times the size of the ones she gave us before. I declined about three times before I basically got embarrassed by her condescension and took it. Then she told me my gift certificate had already been redeemed and wanted me to pay, and it turned out to be some accounting error on the part of her staff, but the way she dealt with it, and already angry about the experience ordering, it left me ready to leave the entire order and walk out the door.

Despite the numerous selection of Gelato for Toronto, I wouldn't go back for the terrible service. Hollywood Gelato and La Paloma are better choices

Title

Rated this place:

From the Italian greeting by some of the best looking Romans outside of Italy, to the pure, intense, unadulterated flavours, Gelatiere is simply the best the city has to offer. Hollywood and La Paloma are catering to the kiddie set and their parents with flavours that are cloyingly sweet, unauthentic and just plain wrong (bubblegum does not belong). I wait all week for my Friday Gelatiere fix. Pure pistachio that tastes of fresh roasted nuts, deep dark chocolate spiked with intense chile peppers create a paradoxical simultaneous hot and cold sensation in the mouth, tiramisu that's dripping with marsala, the freshest lemon, puckery passion fruit or luscious plum with nary a hint of crystalization often found in the fruit flavours. Oh woe is me that today is only Tuesday!

Gelato

Rated this place:

Smooth, rich, flavourful and delicious. So few places can get the texture and the true flavour out of nuts and fruits the way Il Gelaterie does tribute to them. All others will taste greasy and thin in comparison. They also do up fun flavour combinations.

Gelato

They have a million flavours, and they're always rotating them so there's something new all the time. Their fruit flavours are so creamy you'd swear they were ice cream, and the staff is awesome

Il Gelatiere

They greet you in Italiano, and have the best gelato in the 'hood. Why travel all the way to Corso Italia or Little Italy when there's a little piece of Rome right here in Davisville.
